Chapter 212
Eleanor POV
The gentle rhythm of Derek’s breathing filled the quiet hospital room. In the gathering dusk, his hand remained firmly clasped in mine, a tangible reminder that the miracle I’d been praying for had finally happened. He was awake. He had spoken my name. And
now, as twilight settled over Boston, we shared a secret decision to keep his awakening between us until morning.
A soft knock at the door broke our reverie. I squeezed Derek’s hand gently before releasing it, our eyes meeting in silent
understanding. The door opened to reveal Dr. Martin for his evening rounds.
“Good evening, Eleanor,” he said, clipboard in hand. “How are we doing tonight?”
I stood to the side, my body still aching from the long hours by Derek’s bedside, watching as the doctor checked each monitor and
jotted notes. The familiar routine of these visits had marked my days for weeks-each one previously identical in their quiet
desperation. But tonight was different. Tonight I held a precious secret.
“Any changes you’ve noticed?” Dr. Martin asked, his eyes still focused on Derek’s charts.
I glanced at Derek, whose eyes were now closed, his breathing deliberately even. Following our agreement, I replied, “No changes,
Doctor. Everything seems the same as this afternoon.”
Dr. Martin nodded, patting my shoulder gently. “Keep faith, Eleanor. These things take time, but Derek is strong. He gathered his
clipboard and headed toward the door. “Call the nurses if you need anything. I’ll be back in the morning.”
The door clicked shut behind him, and I waited, counting each beat of my heart until I was certain he wouldn’t return. Then I
walked deliberately to the door and turned the lock with a soft click.
When I turned back, Derek’s eyes were fully open, watching me with an intensity that made my breath catch. We exchanged a look
of perfect understanding-no words needed for this conspiracy of ours.
I moved to his side, my fingers trembling as I reached out to touch his face. My fingertips traced a gentle path from his forehead,
down the slope of his nose, to the curve of his chin. Each touch confirmed what seemed impossible just hours ago-he was awake,
he was here, he was with me.
Outside, rain tapped against the window, a typical March evening in Boston. The soft percussion created a private soundscape for
us, insulating our moment from the outside world.
Derek moved his hand with visible effort, the motion slow and labored. But his determination was unmistakable as he reached
toward me. I immediately clasped his hand in mine, feeling the weak pressure of his fingers. Such a small gesture, yet it filled my
chest with overwhelming gratitude.
“Put your bed…” His voice was raspy, each word clearly an effort. “Next to mine… I want to… sleep close to you.”
The unexpected request caught me by surprise, warmth blooming in my chest. I glanced toward the window, watching raindrops race

down the glass, then back to his face, a small smile forming on my lips.
“Okay,” I whispered, moving to the small hospital cot the staff had brought for me weeks ago.
ร
I carefully pushed it across the floor, wincing at each small squeak that seemed thunderous in the quiet room. The rubber feet
scraped softly against the linoleum as I positioned it flush against Derek’s hospital bed, leaving only the narrowest gap between us.
When everything was arranged, I slipped off my shoes and carefully climbed onto my cot. I pulled the thick blanket over me and
turned on my side to face him. We were nearly at eye level now, close enough that I could feel his breath, faint but steady.
In the dimmed light, with rain creating shadow patterns across the ceiling, we lay facing each other. Our hands found each other in
the small space between our beds, fingers intertwining. His grip was weaker than I remembered, but the intention behind it was
stronger than ever.
Without warning, tears welled in my eyes, suddenly overwhelming me. All the fears, the waiting, the moments I thought I’d lost him
forever crashed over me at once.
“I didn’t know if you’d ever…” My voice broke, tears spilling onto my cheeks.
With tremendous effort, Derek lifted his hand to my face. His thumb, trembling slightly, brushed away a tear trailing down my
cheek.
