Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Lillian’s POV

“I would never kill anyone,” I said sternly, in an attempt to leave no room for doubt. I loved my brother. I would do what I needed to protect him, but murder? Ronan would never forgive me for it, and I wouldn’t forgive myself either.

What kind of person did Grayson believe that I was?

As clear and adamant as I thought I had been, he continued to look at me with disbelief. I knew, in that moment, without him even needing to say a word, this was a lost cause. Nothing I could say would change his mind about me. He’d already decided that I was one way, and now he was just attempting to confirm his biases. He had no intention of learning anything about the real me.

“You should get some sleep,” he said. “It’s been a long day for you, and the doctor wishes to see you first thing in the morning.”

“I know you don’t trust me,” I said. “But I won’t betray you.” It felt important to say, at least once more, even knowing that he wouldn’t believe me. I wanted the words out there, spoken aloud, if only so that when I was proven correct, he would then learn I wasn’t a liar.

“Get some sleep,” he said, and turned from me, dismissing me and ending the conversation.

The next morning, bright and early, I went to the medical wing of the estate, to have an actual medical examination with the doctor I knew and trusted. Though, after what happened last time, I didn’t fully relax until he walked into the room.

Blood tests were drawn and a sample taken from between my legs. My fertility was tested, as well as my overall health.

When he had the results of my tests, the doctor sat with me in the examination room. He flipped through the pages of my files, while I sat nervously on the exam table, clutching my knees with my hands.

“The results all look good,” he said. “You appear in overall good health, and your fertility is strong. We can expect healthy children from you, when the time comes.”

When the time comes. Like it wasn’t already upon us, with how much the Queen was pushing for it.

I had yet to talk to Grayson about it. With how much he mistrusted me, he’d likely be suspicious of me bringing up the topic. But with the pressure I was under, we couldn’t avoid it forever. I had been brought here for the purpose of providing Grayson a child. The longer we went without that happening, the more suspicious it seemed.

The more I was likely to be discarded.

“Do you have any questions for me?” the doctor asked.

“Yes, actually… I…” I swallowed down the rising lump in my throat. “I’m a virgin, and I’ve heard that losing my virginity can be… painful. Is there any way to… make it less so?”

The doctor considered me, and feeling like I was being judged, I hurriedly explained.

“I wanted to wait for my mate,” I said, glancing down. “I had hoped to at least be in love with my first…”

The doctor slowly nodded, understanding crossing his face. “You are in a difficult position, being presented to the prince as you were. But I assure you, Prince Grayson is not a brute. When the time comes, he will be gentle with

you.”

My heart ached, but at the same time, pounded more forcefully. I felt like I was caught in a push-pull of emotion. Wanting Grayson. Not wanting Grayson.

Yet while Grayson was certainly attractive, that didn’t mean he was the man I would choose for myself, had I been given a choice. He had been nothing but cold to me.

Except for one moment when he had touched me to ease my unquenchable desire….

My cheeks heated at the memory. The doctor, seeing, smiled softly, misunderstanding. This was no took of fondness! It was embarrassment.

Though I didn’t correct him, not wanting to have to share the truth. Even if I omitted the moments Grayson and I had already shared together, I had no idea how to explain the turmoil taking place inside of me. It wouldn’t change anything anyway.

I was brought here for a singular purpose. To have Grayson’s child. My own feelings hardly mattered.

Leaving the medical building, I walked through the courtyard, returning to the palace. I was almost there, when Calvin appeared from a different direction. Had I seen him, I would have run from him, but I did not notice him until he was already upon me, grabbing my arm in a forceful grip.

“Let me go!” I said at once, but he didn’t listen. Instead, he dragged me off into the gardens, pushing me through the brush until we were on the far side, hidden by the azalea bushes and the flowering trees.

“Keep quiet, if you don’t want me to hurt you,” he hissed.

I was ready to scream.

“Or perhaps I’ll hurt Ronan instead.’

The scream died in my throat and did not emerge.

“That’s what I thought,” he said, smirking, vicious and sharp. It didn’t last before his face shifted to an unhappy glower. “I have waited for you to reach out to me. You have not.”

“I have nothing to say to you,” I said. “You need to leave me alone.”

I remembered Grayson’s words, his warnings, not just about how I needed to stay away from Calvin to not make myself seem suspicious, but about how Grayson believed Calvin was trying to kill him.

Calvin was a cruel man. Conniving. But would he attempt to murder a prince?

A year ago, I wouldn’t have believed it, as much as I had thought myself in love with him. Now, I could see the frosty detachment in his gaze. His fingers bit into my arm, with no sign of remorse or gentleness, no indication that he had ever viewed me as anything more than a means to an end.

I’d been blind before, projecting the man I wanted him to be over the man he was, never seeing him for his true self.

But I could see him now, and what I saw made me chill from the inside out.

I didn’t think Grayson was wrong.

“I’m done waiting. We are leaving, you and me. Together. Now.”

A bolt of fear flashed through me, and I started to struggle more fiercely. “I’m not going anywhere with you.”

Calvin’s hand was like a vice on my arm, tight and unyielding. “Do not fight me.”

“I’m staying here,” I told him. As I pulled against him, he squeezed, bruising my arm. I didn’t care. I’d take the bruises, if it meant I could get away from him.

“I thought it might come to this,” Calvin growled. With his free hand, he reached into his pocket, and withdrew a photograph. He held it out to me.

I stopped at once, seeing my brother. His eye was black and blue and swollen, like someone had punched him. The light in the room he was in was dim, but I could see adorned stone walls behind him. And what appeared to be

chains.

“What have you done?” I gasped.

“Come with me right now,” Calvin said, “Or Ronan will only suffer worse.”
