Chapter 31

Lillian’s POV

“I’m not,” I said. “I didn’t betray you.’

Grayson narrowed his eyes. “Did you think you could keep your relationship with him a secret?”

“We don’t have a relationship.”

“Maybe you don’t now, but you used to. You were even engaged.”

I shook my head. “He lied to me about so many things. Even when I thought he and I were together, he was just stringing me along. He never had any intention of being with me. He was even sleeping with my sister-

“So you are jealous.”

“No,” I said adamantly. “He is a deceiver and a manipulator. I am not jealous. I have no desire to talk to him ever again.”

“You protest too much,” Grayson said.

“What?” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. How could he make that accusation? I hated Calvin for what he had done to me, and for what he kept wanting to do.

“You wouldn’t be this passionate if you didn’t still harbor feelings for him,” Grayson said.

“That’s not true,” I said. “All I want is for him to leave me and my brother alone.”

Grayson swayed into me. I was already as far back against the wall as I could go and had no more room to escape. Instead, I glared at him defiantly as he towered over me, peering down at me with such a sharp gaze, that he almost seemed to see through me.

But I knew he couldn’t actually do that. If he could, he would be able to see that I held nothing but resentment for Calvin anymore after all he had done to me. All he had threatened.

I held Grayson’s gaze, hoping he could see that inside of me without confusing it for withheld romantic feelings. Calvin could take a long trip off of a short pier and I wouldn’t shed a tear.

A moment passed. Then another.

. I started to notice how very little space was between our two bodies, With each of my shaky inhales, my chest rose,

missing his by mere centimeters. Against my better judgement, I wanted to try to close that distance, to push myself against him, to see how he’d react.

At once, I shut down those treacherous thoughts, cursing my body’s infuriating attraction to Grayson, even as he was leering at me like he wanted to snap my neck. In fact, the heat in his eyes only made my body more ramped up, anticipating his touch, like it would somehow be something pleasurable.

For a brief instant, Grayson’s gaze dropped lower, past my face and down to my breasts. I took a deep breath in response, pressing them out so that they barely pressed against his chest in a feather-touch. At the same moment, he moved ever-so-slightly closer, adding more pressure.

I gasped.

He huffed and backed away. Suddenly there were inches between us. It felt as if a canyon had opened up, compared to the closeness we had just shared.

“Even if you and Calvin have broken up now, I cannot trust you not to attempt to betray me in an effort to repair your connection…”

“I wouldn’t-”

“Or for the sake of your brother,” he added. “Ronan, was it?”

I froze, suddenly feeling a little sick. “I have not betrayed you, but you still think the worst of me.”

“I have not survived this long by going against my instincts.”

“And your instincts tell you not to trust me?”

“I don’t know you.”

“Then ask! Ask me anything. Get to know me,” I insisted. “I am not a traitor. And here I am, telling you all the humiliation and hurt that Calvin has put onto me. You saw the marks lashed onto my skin. Yet still, you think I will turn against you? I’ve only ever proven my trustworthiness!”

Grayson’s hand slammed the wall on the side of my head, silencing me at once. Glaring, he leaned in again, bringing his face dangerously close to mine. My heart raced, my body reacted.
