Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 24

Chapter 24

Lillian’s POV

The rifle was utterly busted, useless to shoot, but I turned it sideways at the last minute, using it as a shield instead, to block the rampaging boar. The boar plowed forward, stronger than I had anticipated. His tusks grappled with the rifle, pushing me back a few feet.

Pulled the rifle and then shoving the boar away, I deflected him, and he ran off into the underbrush. He didn’t go far, though, before he turned around and prepared for another attack.

This time, I reached for the pistol. Aimed. Pulled the trigger.

It clicked, but nothing happened. It didn’t fire.

Shit.

The boar barreled forward again. This time, I dodged out of the way, but not before one of his tusks caught my thigh and flipped me. I spun in the air and landed in the dirt.

My wolf growled inside of me, pushing me forward. Everything hurt. My leg was bleeding, but I was not going to just lie in the dirt and die.

This time, as the boar rounded on me, once more, I grabbed the knife that Grayson had so carefully attached to my belt. Pulling it free, I readied myself as the boar attacked.

I leapt, just as the boar reached me. As it raced under me, I slapped down the knife as hard as I could, plunging the blade straight into the boar’s skull. With my full weight behind it, the dagger plunged into flesh and bone.

On muscle memory and momentum, the boar surged forward another foot before his legs gave out and he collapsed, face first to the ground.

I landed on my bad leg, and also fell to the dirt. But I was doing much better than the boar. I was still breathing.

Though as the adrenaline slipped away, the breathing was harder to do. Moving was flat out. The most I could do was twist myself onto my back. Looking up at the tree canopy and the blue sky beyond, I wondered if this was how I was going to die, bleeding out in the forest, gored by a boar.

Who would know I was missing? Of those few, who would come looking for me?

I didn’t have a death wish. I didn’t want to die here. But I couldn’t move. The more time that went by, the more blood loss I endured, the less I cared about this being the end.

The sun drifted across the sky.

Then, someone stepped over me, casting me in their shadow.

I blinked a few times to see in the sudden darkness. “Prime Beta?” I had to be dreaming.

“I have a horse,” he said. “Can you stand?”

“Am I dead?” I asked.

“I’ll take that as a no,” he replied and leaned, reaching for me.

I must have blacked out. When I came back to myself, I was sitting atop a horse, swaying gently as we moved forward. Beside the horse, walked Prime Beta, who dragged the corpse of the boar I had killed behind me. He also had both of my weapons, the broken rifle strapped over one shoulder and the ill-functioning pistol in his belt.

“I tried to… shoot it…” I said.

“Don’t talk,” Prime Beta said. “Save your strength. You are going to need it to claim your trophy.”

“What trophy?” I asked, blinking.

“You’ll see.”

Eventually, we reached the edge of the forest, and then went out into the field. There, I could see everyone else gathered around a small stage where the other game were displayed.

A few dear. Some rabbits. Even a squirrel.

No one else had a boar.

Prime Beta led the horse closer, then dropped the reins. He dragged the boar carcass up the stairs of the stage, then threw it down, right in front of the Queen. The Queen, who had been about to award Ophelia.

“Where did this come from?” the Queen asked him.

He gestured toward me. “The Luna Princess made the kill.”

Surprised murmurs chattered around me, people openly gaping at me, at the boar carcass.
