Chapter 19

Lillian’s POV

Before I could even attempt to defend myself, Piers pointed an accusatory finger at me and declared, “This harlot attempted to seduce me.”

“I did not,” I snapped.

“I was simply heading toward the bathroom. You saw it, Josie. You saw how she came onto me, didn’t you? Look at her dress! She couldn’t even keep her clothes on around me.”

“You tore my dress,” I said. “I didn’t -”

“You have a way with men, don’t you?” Josephine said, glowering at me. Whatever kindness she had previously shown me, whatever bond we had formed over the care of her brother had vanished. Now, she looked at me Иke was worse than scum. “First you found a way into my brother’s bed, but that’s not enough for you. Now you need my fiancé? Is my brother not enough for you?”

Piers dusted himself off, no longer as urgent. He sauntered closer to Josephine. “I resisted her as best I could,” he said. “I didn’t want to hurt her. Weak thing, a Gamma. I had to push myself away.”

“I know,” Josephine said. “I saw.’

“The surrogate is a liar,” Ophelia said. “She’s lied since the day she was brought here. I’m not sure how she sneaked by Prince Grayson’s wolf, but I’m sure that was a trick too.”

“I can’t believe I almost liked you for a moment,” Josephine said. “I even helped pick out that gown. The same gown you tried to seduce my fiancé with.”

“It’s not like that,” I said, pleading. “If you would only hear me out -”

“We’ve all heard enough,” Ophelia said.

“Josephine -”

“Don’t say her name like you know her,” Ophelia said.

Josephine lifted her chin, glaring deeply. “You don’t deserve my brother.”

She was right. I was a nobody from nowhere, mistreated by everyone who had ever presumed to love me. Maybe I had been treated that way because I didn’t deserve anyone. Maybe I was as tainted as my family had led me to believe.

Even if I wasn’t, I certainly didn’t deserve a prince, nor did I want one. None of what was happening to me had been my choice. I was prisoner here, even if I had no bars around me. Then that fake-doctor had tried to kill me. Now Piers was attempting to take more from me than I had ever given, more than I was willing to give to him.

He’d been so nice, talking to me about art, making me feel like my opinion had mattered. It was all just one more

ruse.

So no, maybe I didn’t deserve Prince Grayson.

But one thing I did know for sure.

“Josephine,” I said, loud and confident. “You deserve better than Piers.”

Josephine’s eyes went wide.

Ophelia crossed her arms. “Don’t listen to her. She’s just trying to confuse you. She deserves punishment, Josie. Send her to the dungeon.”

Josephine glanced at my dress, then at Piers, who was still holding part of my sleeve in his fist. At her glance, he seemed to be realizing he still held it and dropped it. Josie watched it flutter down to the floor.

“Punish her, Josie,” Ophelia insisted.

Josephine swallowed hard. “I want to go back to the party.”

“But Lillian -” Ophelia started.

“Let her do what she wants,” Josephine said. “She can’t run from what she did.”

“But…” Ophelia said.

“I want to go,” Josephine pressed.

“My love,” Piers said and offered her his arm. Josephine hesitated for only a second before sliding her arm through his and allowing him to lead her away.

Ophelia stayed a beat longer. “You’ll get yours,” she said to me, then hurried after the others, leaving me alone in the hallway.

No longer did I want to hide in the bathroom, but I wanted to run away. With my dress in this state, I couldn’t return to the party even if I wanted to. I didn’t.

Instead, I allowed my wolf to guide my steps. She pulled me up the stairs and down familiar corridors, to Grayson’s room. I knocked lightly, then entered.

Grayson was on the bed, pretending to be asleep.

Quickly, I closed the door behind me. As soon as I did so, he emerged from the bed with quick speed. His eyes were on the ripped part of my dress. I tried to cover it with my hands, holding up what remained of that part of my bodice in a hope to maintain what little remained of my dignity, even as the tears started to well and my bottom lip trembled.

If Josephine hadn’t come around that corner when she did…

I’d fought to preserve my virginity for so long. If someone like Piers had been the one to rip it away from me… I shuddered.

Grayson moved closer to me. I pressed against the wall near the door, and he came closer, just like Piers did. Yet, now, it was so much different. My wolf wasn’t defensive, but keening. The warmth, the scent, radiating from Grayson soothed me in a way I didn’t think possible.

As frightened as I had been, now that fear was fading away, replaced almost instantly with a desire for my mate to touch me, as if the feel of his hands would wipe away the sense of wrong that still clung to my skin where Piers had been.

“Who?” Grayson asked, his voice so rough, it was nearly a growl. The image of his wolf flickered on the bed, haunches risen, eyes flashing as dangerously as Grayson’s own.

“I was on my way to the bathroom,” I said. “Piers followed me. He…” Even saying his name made me feel sick.

Grayson inched closer and at once, I was cleansed of that feeling.

“I told you to stay away from him,” he said. “Instead, you let him touch you.”

“I pushed him away.”

Grayson looked down at my dress. He swatted my hand away, and the torn flap of my bodice fell, revealing the cup of my bra. The bra was lacy black, translucent in some places.

I swallowed hard as he continued to stare. My nipple hardened, pressing against the itchy lace. Was that what he

was looking so intensely at? My cheeks burned, and my body was hot. Leaning back against the wall, pushed ny chest forward, unable to stop myself from giving him more to look at.

And look he did.

My wolf preened.

Beneath the lust at the surface of my skin, I was mortified by my own actions, yet I was so turned on, I couldn’t stop myself.

Slowly, he started to lift one of his strong hands. He hovered just over my breast, not quite touching.

A knock sounded at the door.

He stepped back. I hurriedly covered myself.

Prime Beta entered the room, and I turned away to hide my blush.

Grayson looked at me, I could feel his gaze on my back like a touch. A touch that only a moment ago, I had wanted so badly to feel on my breast.

“Piers attacked the Luna Princess,” Grayson said. His voice was more measured now, lacking every emotion except coldness. “Handle it. He needs to learn to stay loyal to Josie. He also needs a lesson about not touching things that don’t belong to him.”
