Chapter 15
The medical wing smelled like disinfectant and cold metal. I sat on the examination table in a paper gown, my legs dangling off the edge, waiting for the weekly check that the Queen had ordered.
The door opened, and the wrong doctor walked in.
He was young- mid-thirties, maybe with a thin face and glasses that sat crooked on his nose. He carried a medical bag and a clipboard, and he smiled at me with too many teeth.
“Good morning, Luna Princess. I’m filling in for Dr. Harlan today.” He set the bag on the counter and began pulling out supplies. “We’ll do a standard check, and then I’ll administer an injection. Hormone support. Helps with conception.”
I watched his hands. He unpacked a syringe, a small glass vial, cotton swabs, and a rubber tourniquet. His fingers fumbled the vial cap. He had to try twice to draw the liquid into the syringe, and when he tapped the barrel to clear the air bubbles, his hand trembled.
Dr. Harlan drew blood with his eyes closed. This man handled a needle like he’d learned from a textbook yesterday
“Hold out your arm, please.”
I held out my left arm. He tied the tourniquet above my elbow and swabbed the inside of my forearm. The needle hovered over the vein.
I grabbed his wrist, twisted the syringe out of his hand, and drove the needle into his thigh.
He screamed.
The clipboard hit the floor. He stumbled backward, yanking the needle from his leg, his face twisting from shock to fury.
“You
– you crazy” He lunged for me.
I kicked the medical bag into his path and bolted for the door. The hallway was empty. I ran.
Behind me, his voice echoed off the corridor walls. “Stop her! She’s a patient – she refused treatment – she attacked me – someone stop her!”
Two orderlies appeared at the far end of the hall. I ducked left through a supply closet and out a service door into a back stairwell. My bare feet slapped the stone steps. The paper gown flapped around my thighs.
I pressed myself flat against the wall of the stairwell landing and held my breath.
Footsteps pounded past above me. Voices barking orders.
Then – quieter. A voice around the corner, low and tight, talking into a phone.
“She figured it out. Stabbed me with the damn syringe before I could administer it.” A pause. The fake doctor’s voice was strained. “No, I couldn’t finish. She’s fast – faster than any Gamma should be.” Another pause. “I know the plan is compromised. I’ll handle it. Just give me time.”
The footsteps retreated. I stayed pressed against the wall until my heartbeat stopped drowning out everything else.
Whoever had sent that man wanted something injected into my body, and it wasn’t hormone support. And whoever was on the other end of that phone call was giving orders.
The traitor. The one Grayson was hunting. They knew about me now.

“I’m not asking you again.”
I pulled the hem up to my ribs. The skin along my left side was purple and scraped raw where I’d hit the stairwell railing. The old lash wounds on my back had reopened in two places, thin lines of red seeping through the closed skin.
Grayson knelt beside the bed. His hands were steady. He pressed a gauze pad soaked in antiseptic against the worst of the scraping, and I sucked air through my teeth.
“Hold still,” he said. The same words he’d said the night he’d put his hand between my legs. But the tone was different now. Quieter. The sharp edge filed down to something I almost didn’t recognize.
He cleaned the wound in silence. Taped the gauze in place. His fingers brushed the edge of one of the reopened lash marks on my back, and he paused.
His thumb traced the raised line of the scar. Just once. Light enough that I might have imagined it.
“You shouldn’t have gone back to that pack,” he said.
Then he stood, returned the supplies to the cabinet, and lay back down on the bed with his eyes closed. The conversation was over.
I sat on the edge of the mattress with the gauze warm against my side and his fingerprint still burning on my back.
My wolf purred. I didn’t argue with her this time.
