Chapter 147
Chapter 147
Lillian’s POV

When I wasn’t pushing myself to my limits on the training ground, I dedicated myself to actually planning Odette’s welcoming event. I wasn’t looking forward to the event, and I still had unhappy feelings about it taking place on my birthday, without any acknowledgement of my birthday at all.
But, maybe because I felt my title being threatened, I wanted to prove myself to the Queen and to all my disbelievers. I was worthy of being Luna Princess, Grayson’s mate. I was a warrior first, but I was multi-faceted could train others on the sword and bow, but I could also plan a dazzling event.
I wondered too if I was so committed to this event as a way to make atonement for my guilt. I was jealous of Odette, of the way she had held Grayson’s attention, and Josie’s. But what had Odette truly done wrong? She had been hurt in the attack and had a harrowing journey trying to find her way back here. To put my own feelings first was entirely selfish.
Maybe, if I tried hard enough, I could even be friends with Odette and see what all of the others saw in her. After all, she wasn’t the one I had heard saying she wanted to take my place at Grayson’s side. Perhaps Josie was right, and these were all truly court rumors. Even Reginald could have fallen victim to the rumor mill. Given his strong attachment to Odette, he would naturally prefer her to me and think her more worthy. He didn’t even know me.
Yet, even as I worked to plan the best event I could, I was unable to fully surprise my very mixed feelings about all
this.
Ivory, who was helping me, gave me a critical look. I tried ignoring it.
We were in the ballroom, which had just been stripped of the decorations from the last event. Like this, it was a blank slate for whatever vision I could cook up. Ivory had a notebook and a pen, writing down my ideas. A few other servants were nearby, holding up various swatches of color at our request.
During a small break, as the servants readjusted the swatches, Ivory seemed unable to hold back anymore. “Are you really okay with this?”
“It’s just a party,” I said.
“Yeah, a party dedicated to the woman who is trying to steal your life.” Ivory put a hand on her hip. Her stomach had been slowly growing since I’ve come to know her, though she continued to hide it under baggy dresses. “It’s all the nobles are talking about. Odette and Prince Grayson this, Odette and Prince Grayson that. For the Queen to even tell you to do this shows where her loyalties lie.”
“It’s my duty as the Luna Princess to plan events like this.”
“They want you to be subservient to your replacement,” Ivory hissed, not daring to speak against the Queen at full volume. “It’s not right.”
While I was pleased to have Ivory’s friendship, for her and some of the other servants to be so loyal to me that they would take my side over their employers’, I had to defend my mate from the undertones of these kinds of accusations.
“It doesn’t matter what anyone things,” I said. “Grayson is my mate. He will not leave me for Odette.”
“Everyone is saying he and Odette used to be an item,” Ivory said.
“That’s a rumor,” I said. “But even if it was true, they are only friends now.”
“How can you be so sure?”

“I trust Grayson,” I said. “If he had plans for Odette, he would tell me. He’s not the kind of man to play games.”
Ivory gave me a skeptical sideways glance. “I really hope you are right.” She had been jaded by love since Calvin’s betrayal. He’d since been driven out of the pack, though Ivory continued to carry her child. I wondered if she would purposefully hide who the father was.
She was a friend now, one of few I could genuinely trust, and whatever she chose to do, I would support her.
Hoping to change the subject, I told her, “I want to see the seafoam color again when the others are ready. The lighter colors might add some joviality to the event.”
Ivory shook her head, but said, “Sure. I’ll tell them.”
We continued planning the event for another hour or so. By that time, most of the big decisions had been made and we were just discussing smaller matters.
The servants had hung up a few seafoam banners, and we were discussing possible flower choices.
At this point, Grayson walked into the room. His eyes looked around before settling on me. As he moved toward me with purpose, Ivory slipped away. By the time Grayson reached me the others were on the other side of the ballroom, purposefully looking away from us.
“I like the colors,” Grayson said and kissed me chastely on the lips.
I wanted more, so I lifted my hands and placed them on his chest.
He hummed, wrapped his arms around me and kissed me more fully, his lips lingering against mine. Kisses like this helped mend the holes in my heart, the doubt that had curdled eased away.
As the kiss broke, he didn’t go far. He continued to hold me. “I can’t stay long,” he said, “But I had to see you.”
“I miss you,” I said, surprised by my own admission. But when I said the words, I knew they were the truth. I did miss him terribly. “You were gone this morning.”
“I had work that needed done,” he said, his gaze falling away. “I’d been pushing off some of my duties to try to get answers from Odette.”
A bit of doubt rose back up within me. Was he truly trying to get answers? Or had he just wanted to spend time with her?
No. I couldn’t allow myself to fall victim to this line of thinking. I trusted Grayson. I had to trust him. The only other option was to drive myself mad with worry.
Grayson reached up a hand and cupped my cheek. “I know I have been gone a lot.” He didn’t apologize, but regret shone in his eyes. For now that was enough. “But I have a surprised I’m planning for you.”
“You do?”
“Yes. The night of this event, do not make plans for afterwards. You and I will be spending the evening together, becoming reacquainted.”
My heart skipped a beat at what that could mean, anticipation filling me with delight.
Grayson leaned in and kissed me again. This time I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him back with as much passion as I could muster. He met me with equal fervor.
In that moment, it didn’t matter that we were in the middle of the ballroom, being sneakily peeked at by the servants nearby.

We were two mates rekindling our bond after too long apart.
As we came up for air, my whole body was buzzing. “Are you sure we have to wait so long? Can’t we become reacquainted now?”
His lips quirked upright in amusement, but the expression didn’t last. “If only I could,” he said. “But wait for me, alright? I will make everything up to you after the banquet.”
I trusted him. Or at least, I was determined to, so I said, “Okay.’
