Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 103

Chapter 103

Lillian’s POV

+15 Bonus

After seeing Ivory disappear into the room with Calvin, their lips locked, tongues tangled, Clara and I looked at each other with wide eyes. I was utterly shocked by the revelation, though maybe I shouldn’t have been. If Calvin had been willing to cheat on me with Maren, then why wouldn’t he cheat on Maren with someone else?

But Calvin was usually more calculating than this. Would he just have an affair with a maid, knowing she couldn’t offer him anything in return? Or..

Gods, what if she was pregnant?

“Let’s get out of here before we’re seen,” Clara said.

“Agreed.”

Quietly we walked away, until we could find an empty sitting room to sneak into and discuss this away from any prying ears and eyes.

“Affairs aren’t… unheard of… in court life,” Clara said. “Lonely old men often go for the younger ladies, even the maids, as distasteful as that is.”

“Calvin is not a lonely old man,” I said. “He’s engaged. Recently. You saw how happy Maren was.” I shook my head. “The man is a fiend, and he cheated on me. But I just… everything he does is for a purpose. He could be sleeping with a maid just for the fun of it, but that seems reckless.”

“He seems like a reckless kind of guy.”

She wasn’t wrong. I could be reading way too much into this. But…

“It worries me, the way she protected her stomach like she’s pregnant,” I said. “If that’s Calvin’s child… he could be up to something.”

Clara nodded critically. “We should keep an eye on her. She seemed rattled, before she saw Calvin. Maybe if we tried to talk to her, she’d tell us something. We could at least try to make sure that she’s okay.”

“Yeah,” I said, feeling somewhat defeated. “That’s all we can really do, isn’t it?”

“Unfortunately, I think it is,” Clara said.

I hated feeling so helpless, but, maybe when we could get Ivory alone, if we could talk to her, more opportunities to help would reveal themselves.

After parting with Clara, I returned to Grayson’s room. He glanced up at me from the desk, but then returned to whatever paperwork he was looking through.

“Here,” he said, gesturing to a pair of envelopes sitting on the edge of the desk. “Those arrived for you.”

“Oh.” I moved closer and plucked the envelopes from the corner of the desk. One was a sturdier envelope, squarer, like it would house an invitation. I opened that one first and indeed pulled out an invitation.

Grayson glanced up at me without moving his head, just his eyes.

Reading quickly, I explained, “It’s an invitation for Maren’s engagement ceremony.”

“Maren?”

“My stepsister,” I said. “They are having the ceremony at my father’s house in my old pack.”

Grayson leaned back in the chair.

“You are invited too,” I said. “I wonder why your name isn’t on the invitation.”

“Your father, the Gamma, likely wanted you to see it. I believe the letter is from him too,” Grayson said.

I looked at the second envelope, which remained sealed. “You didn’t read it?”

“It’s not addressed to me,” Grayson said. “But if there is anything in there that I need to hear, I would like to know about it.”

“I’ll tell you,” I said, tearing open the letter. It was difficult to do so while holding the invitation so I passed it to him to look at while I focused on the letter. He glared at the invitation, frowning.

“Is this something you wish to attend?” he asked.

“Not even remotely,” I said. “Especially not after what happened last time.”

Grayson nodded. “I thought not, but…” He glanced at the letter. “I’m willing to bet that your father is about to make a rejection more difficult.”

“I’m not taking that bet,” I said. “Because I’m certain that’s right.”

Pulling out the letter, I opened it and began to read. I barely made it past the first page before I scoffed at his tone.

“What does he say?” Grayson asked.

I cleared my throat. “Daughter. You will return for your sister’s event. That is not an option.”” My voice broke as I read ahead. “Not if you want to save your brother. I have the antidote that can cure him, and I’m willing to negotiate under agreeable terms.””

Grayson tensed slightly, his fingers curling around the edge of his paperwork, crinkling it.
