That realization made him violently irritable.

He turned and stalked back into the living room.

Willow was packing the rocket base back into its box.

"Lawrence, I have to run to the Langford Philanthropy Dept this afternoon to drop off some files, so I probably won't be able to keep Leo company."

Lawrence glanced at her. "I'll have the driver take you."

Willow quickly waved her hands. "Oh, no, that's too much trouble. I can just go myself."

"He's heading that way anyway," Lawrence said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Also, about that rehab manual you pitched last time—I'm having the Philanthropy Dept work with you on it."

Willow's eyes immediately lit up.

"Really?"

Lawrence nodded. "You handled yourself well last night. You'll take the lead on this project."

A very genuine smile spread across Willow's face.

"Thank you, Lawrence. I promise I won't let you down."

Hearing this, Eleanor smiled approvingly. "Willow is just so capable. I watched the news coverage from last night—so many people were saying what a perfect match you two make. If it weren't for..."

She stopped herself halfway, realizing what she was about to say.

But the implication hung heavy in the air.

*If it weren't for Wren still occupying the position of Mrs. Langford.*

Willow lowered her head, her cheeks flushing slightly.

"Eleanor, please don't say things like that. Wren will be upset if she hears you."

Lawrence didn't respond.

But he didn't refute Eleanor's 'perfect match' comment either.

Just outside the doorway, Wren was leading Leo back inside and caught the very last sentence.

Her footsteps paused.

Leo was still holding her hand, his eyes puffy and red.

Willow immediately stood up, acting as if nothing had happened.

"Leo, why are you crying?"

She walked over, reaching out to pat Leo's head.

But Leo instinctively shrank back, pressing closer to Wren's side.

Willow's hand froze in mid-air.

Her smile shattered for a fraction of a second.

Wren saw it all.

But she felt absolutely no triumph.

She simply crouched down and looked at Leo. "Mom has to go now."
