But that scene had sent a genuine spike of terror through her.

A man's need for control was dangerously close to obsession.

It was so close that if Wren softened even a fraction, if she took a single step back toward him, Lawrence would drag her right back to the center of his universe.

No.

She couldn't let that happen.

Willow lowered her head, instantly adjusting her expression to perfection.

As Wren walked past her, she paused for a brief second.

Their eyes met.

Willow's eyes were slightly red, as if she was horrified by the violence she'd witnessed, or perhaps embarrassed on someone else's behalf.

"Wren..."

Wren gave her a single glance.

It was completely indifferent.

There were no explanations, no arguments, and no panic at being caught.

"Take a good look," Wren said flatly. "That's the kind of man you stole."

Willow went pale.

Wren didn't spare her another second of attention and stepped straight into the elevator.

The doors slid shut.

Willow stood rooted to the spot, her chest heaving as she collected herself. Slowly, she turned and pushed open the door to the reception room.

Lawrence was still standing exactly where Wren had left him.

There was a faint red mark on the side of his face. His collar was slightly askew. He radiated the terrifying, cold energy of a suppressed storm.

Willow didn't rush toward him.

She understood men in these moments.

When a man's pride was entirely shattered, you couldn't rush to comfort him. Moving too fast made it look like you were pitying him.

Instead, she asked softly, "Lawrence, are you okay?"

Lawrence looked up at her.

His gaze was predatory and ice-cold.

"Who told you to come in here?"

Willow's fingers trembled, and tears instantly welled in her eyes.

"I came to drop off the gala project files. Xavier said you were in a meeting, so I was going to wait outside." She paused, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I didn't mean to see that."

Lawrence said nothing.

Willow set the files on the desk. Her eyes flicked to the red mark on his cheek before quickly looking away.

She didn't ask if it hurt.
