Watching the two of them play, Lyra couldn't help but smile.
Rowan turned to look at her right as the bright sunlight filtered through the floating bubbles, casting a faint, rainbow-like glow across her radiant complexion. His gaze lingered on her face, struck by how breathtakingly beautiful she was when she genuinely smiled.
Rowan still had work to finish and needed to head back to the office. He carefully buckled Pip into the car seat in Andrea's vehicle before turning back to Lyra. "Don't forget we're having dinner at my parents' place tonight," he reminded her, his voice low.
"I know."
Rowan stared down at her, his dark eyes intense and unreadable.
Lyra met his gaze for only a few seconds before she moved to slide into the back seat.
"Wait." He caught her arm, pulling her in for a brief embrace, and whispered against her ear. "What's the standard protocol for a man begging for his wife's affection?"
Lyra froze, her cheeks instantly burning hot. "Psycho," she muttered, pushing him away as she climbed into the car, though she couldn't completely suppress the smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
Rowan chuckled. He reached out and gently closed the door for her. Leaning down toward the rolled-down window, he looked at the driver. "Take it easy on the road, Andrea."
"Understood, Boss," Andrea replied, shifting the car into gear.
Halfway through the drive, Lyra asked Andrea to make a detour to her family's estate.
When she arrived at the Fairchild residence, only Delilah and Caleb's twins were home. Because a nasty flu was making the rounds at kindergarten, Caleb had kept the girls home for the week.
While the twins ran around the courtyard playing with Pip, Lyra sat in the living room, catching up with her mother.
Bringing up family matters, Delilah said, "You bought Caleb so much stuff last time, but you really didn't need to. He doesn't need all that. You should have bought something for Kayla instead. Getting everything for your brother might make Kayla feel like you think she isn't taking good care of him."
Lyra was slightly taken aback. "I honestly didn't think about it that deeply. I'll be more mindful next time."
