Rowan didn't say a word. He just kept his head down, downing drink after drink, the melancholy in his eyes masked by layers of intoxication.
Watching him spiral, Julian finally spoke up. "Cut it out. Keep this up and you'll end up with alcohol poisoning."
"It's getting late. Say hi to your wife for me." Julian patted Rowan's arm. "Go home."
Wesley walked back into the room right at that moment. Julian gestured toward him. "We're done for the night. Take your boss home to rest."
"Understood." Wesley rushed forward, hauling a clearly wasted Rowan out of the club and driving him straight back to Blackwood Manor.
Lyra heard the commotion of his return from the bedroom and stepped out to greet him. The moment she saw Rowan's pale face and caught the overpowering stench of liquor, she frowned. She reached out to steady his arm. "How did you end up drinking this much?"
"He was having drinks with a friend today..." Wesley explained.
"What friend?" Rowan didn't have many friends, and she knew almost all of them.
"Mr. Shaw."
Lyra paused for a second before wrapping her hands around Rowan's other arm to help support his weight. The intense smell of alcohol hit her nose, and she couldn't help but mutter, "You reek."
Together, she and Wesley managed to lug the heavy man onto the bed.
Lyra had one knee on the mattress. Just as she tried to pull away, a hand clamped down hard on her wrist. Rowan's eyes were shut tight, his mind clearly still foggy, but his grip was ironclad. She couldn't break free.
Wesley took one look and politely averted his gaze. Seeing that his boss was safely delivered, he bowed slightly to Lyra. "Ma'am, Mr. Jameson is safely home. I'll take my leave now."
"Right..." Lyra mumbled, entirely focused on trying to yank her hand back, but no matter how hard she tugged, she couldn't escape his hold.
Suddenly, his alcohol-addled brain overriding all logic, Rowan yanked her down onto the bed with him. His eyes shot open, bloodshot and frantic, as he growled in a raw loss of control, "Lyra, you don't even love me!"
The words hung in the quiet bedroom, freezing the air instantly.
