After York left, Caleb turned to Lyra. "Are you sure your position as Mrs. Jameson is secure? Not only do women throw themselves at your husband, but guys worship him too??"
"It's better if it's not secure. You just focus on running Fairchild Holdings. When Rowan kicks me to the curb, I'll bring Pip here and crash with you." Lyra patted Caleb's shoulder and grabbed her purse from the table. "I'm heading out. Pip hasn't seen me all day."
Standing by the elevator, Lyra thought about the aging watch Caleb had been wearing for three straight years. She made a mental note to take a trip to the luxury mall tomorrow and pick out a new watch for him.
As soon as the car pulled into Blackwood Manor, a tiny figure came sprinting out from the front door.
"Mommy's home!"
Pip charged over on his stubby little legs, throwing himself at Lyra and hugging her knees tightly, rubbing his soft cheek against her skirt. "Mommy..."
The heavy exhaustion Lyra had been carrying all day instantly melted away. She bent down, scooped the little boy into her arms, and nuzzled her nose against his soft hair.
"Did you eat, sweetheart?"
The Nanny laughed. "Pip insisted on waiting for you to get home. We tried everything, but he wouldn't touch his food."
"Alright then, let's go eat." Lyra said, glancing up at the second floor.
A maid stepped forward and reported quietly, "Ma'am, Mr. Jameson called to say he has more work and won't be home for dinner. He asked if you made it back safely. Shall I call him back to let him know you're here?"
"Yes." Lyra carried Pip inside, and Andrea followed them into the dining room.
In the dead of night, the bedroom was dimly lit by a single bedside lamp. Lyra was hovering on the edge of sleep when she felt someone wrap their arms around her waist from behind. The movement was incredibly gentle, as if terrified of waking her. Instinctively, she snuggled back against the warm, solid chest and drifted off into a deep, peaceful slumber.
The next afternoon, Lyra took advantage of Pip's naptime to head out to the luxury boutiques.
