The next morning, sunlight filtered through the hotel's sheer curtains, casting a soft, pale glow across the bed.
Pip rolled over between them, his tiny arm instinctively draping over Lyra's. His soft, rhythmic breathing brushed gently against her forearm.
Lyra opened her eyes and turned to look at Rowan. He was still asleep, though the exhaustion etched into his features had noticeably faded. After a night of rest, his complexion looked much better than the pale, haggard state he had been in the day before.
Holding her breath so she wouldn't wake him, Lyra gently moved his hand off her waist and carefully sat up.
Rowan was a light sleeper. The moment she moved, his eyelashes fluttered, and he slowly opened his eyes.
As their gazes met, he reached out and lightly grasped her wrist. "Where are you going?"
"You're awake?" she asked, her voice softening.
"Yeah," he murmured, his voice thick with sleep, the redness in his eyes having cleared up significantly.
"I'm going to brush my teeth. I'll let the baby sleep a little longer."
Rowan's gaze lingered on her face, dark and heavy, before he finally released her.
Lyra hurried into the bathroom, gathering her dark, gorgeous hair into a messy bun at the top of her head. As she bent over the sink to brush her teeth, the graceful curve of her neck was left exposed.
He followed her in, watching her for a moment before picking up his blue toothbrush to join her.
"Can we head back this morning?" she asked softly after rinsing her face.
"Sure. Are you hungry?"
Lyra shook her head.
He reached out, wrapping his arm firmly around her waist and pulling her flush against his chest. "If you're not hungry, how about you feed me instead?"
It took a second for his meaning to register. She looked at him in shock. "You're injured."
"My heart hurts far worse, and only you can heal it."
