She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry novel Chapter 689

Meanwhile, in one of the other cabin suites, Pip had just finished a warm bowl of oatmeal. Sleepiness washed over him, and he curled up on the soft mattress, drifting into a deep slumber.

Dylan Chavez stared at the little boy's squishy cheeks and whispered, "How old is he?"

"He's a little over one," Lyra replied, keeping her voice low so as not to wake the sleeping baby.

"His name is Pip?"

"Yeah, his full name is Pip Jameson. What's your name?"

"Dylan Chavez," the boy answered. His tone was steady, remarkably quiet for his age. "My dad said the three of us will sleep in here tonight, and he'll take the captain's quarters."

He pulled back the blankets and offered a polite gesture, acting every bit the little gentleman.

Lyra glanced toward the bow of the ship and asked, "How come it's just you and your dad? Did your mom not want to visit your grandmother's house with you?"

Dylan lowered his eyes, his tone flat. "Mom is worried that my grandmother doesn't like her, so she didn't want to come. She stayed behind."

Lyra felt a twinge of awkwardness.

But then she realized that Lucas Chavez had traveled all this way on New Year's Eve to be with his family, which meant his marriage had to be fairly solid. That thought eased her discomfort.

When Lyra woke up the next morning, the yacht was temporarily docked at a marina. She stepped out onto the deck. The morning mist still clung to the water, and the pale golden sunrise cut through the fog, making the gentle waves sparkle around the hull.

Not long after, Lucas returned carrying several large shopping bags. He had bought breakfast, diapers, bottles, and a few different stages of baby formula—an impressive haul.

Lyra couldn't help but feel a little impressed. He really had settled into fatherhood and knew exactly what a baby needed.

She also couldn't help but wonder if she was a magnet for toxic men. When Lucas was with her, he'd been a total jerk. But after they split, he'd transformed into the perfect family man.

Still, perhaps to keep a respectable distance, Lucas barely spoke to her. He set down the breakfast and immediately woke Dylan up, telling him to wash his face, brush his teeth, and come eat.

Lyra took the initiative. "I'm going to head out now. Could I borrow some money? I'll pay you back the second I get back to Seaborne City."

Lucas slid a plate toward her and flatly refused. "If something happens to you, how am I supposed to explain it to him?"

"Then where are you taking me?"

"Rochelle City."

"We live in Rochelle City!" Dylan chimed in, running out and grabbing a sandwich.
