Lyra was finally able to come downstairs for meals, but the atmosphere at the dining table was bizarrely tense. Grandpa Alistair watched the young couple eat in near silence, essentially carrying the conversation entirely on his own.
"What is going on with you two? Didn't you already make up?"
Rowan placed a small plate of soy sauce in front of Lyra, his ears flushing red all over again. "I'm just hungover."
Both embarrassed and annoyed, Lyra's hand trembled under the table as she reached over to pinch his thigh.
Rowan had anticipated the attack. He smoothly caught her restless hand, locking it firmly in his grip, while keeping his face perfectly neutral, acting as if absolutely nothing was happening beneath the tablecloth.
"I'm glad you've made up," Grandpa Alistair laughed. "I've overstayed my welcome here. I'll be heading back tomorrow. Rowan, arrange for someone to drive me."
Lyra immediately tried to convince him to stay. "Grandpa, why are you leaving so soon? Stay a bit longer. Blackwood Manor is peaceful, and it'll be easier for you to see Pip."
"I'll be sure to visit my great-grandson often in the future. But I still have my birds back at the old estate. I need to go check on them and make sure they're alright."
Early the next morning, Rowan personally arranged for a security detail to escort Grandpa Alistair back to his home.
As soon as Grandpa Alistair left, Victoria Jameson came over to visit her grandson. Walking into the nursery bathroom, she was surprised to find Rowan with his sleeves rolled up, expertly bathing Pip.
With so many professional nannies standing by, Victoria couldn't help but ask, "With all the nannies and staff we have, why is a busy man like you doing this yourself?"
Rowan lowered his head, gently washing the baby's tiny hands. He smiled. "She said she wanted a man who acts like a real father."
Victoria froze in her tracks. "I had no idea you were so wrapped around her finger."
She was about to go tease her daughter-in-law about it, but Rowan stopped her. "Please don't go antagonizing her. It took everything I had just to get back in her good graces."
Otherwise, he'd be back on the floor begging for forgiveness.
Watching her son delicately wash his baby's neck, Victoria felt a mix of exasperation and amusement.
She shot Rowan a fond glare. "Understood. Look at you, totally whipped. I don't know what to do with you."
Victoria then leaned in to coo at the baby during his bath.
Rowan didn't stop what he was doing. He wrapped Pip in a soft towel and carefully placed him into the temperature-controlled crib.
Before Lyra could even process what he meant, he casually stripped off his loungewear and lay flat on the bed, spreading his arms wide. "Climb on top of me. Hit me all you want to blow off steam."
Lyra's face flushed hotly. She glared at him, exasperated. "In your dreams! You're clearly just trying to take advantage of me and cop a feel. Don't even think about it. Not a chance."
With that, Lyra darted next door to check on the baby.
Watching her flustered retreat, Rowan leaned against the headboard and let out a low chuckle, his eyes swimming with endless affection.
...
A few days later, Rowan drove alone to a secret meeting at The Private Tea House, where he sat down with Waylon Grayson's father.
Rowan didn't waste time. "Waylon has been using that old planned obsolescence issue to orchestrate a PR crisis and short Jameson Tech's stock. I'm sure you've heard some whispers about what he's been up to."
George sweated profusely. "Mr. Jameson, I am incredibly sorry. I had no idea that ungrateful son of mine..."
Rowan cut him off. "Business is business. But if he dares to flip my board, I have every ability to destroy the entire Grayson Group."
