Aside from the immediate family, the news of the birth was kept strictly under wraps.
Inside the hospital room, Lyra stared at the door. Her eyes sparkled with anticipation, shining with astonishing brightness.
The older generation had all gone to see the baby, leaving her alone in the room for the moment.
Rowan's chest felt incredibly warm. Unable to restrain himself, he leaned down and pressed a tender, adoring kiss to her lips.
"Just focus on resting and recovering for the next couple of months. I will take care of absolutely everything else," he promised.
"Okay," Lyra agreed. Her fingers played with each other nervously. Her mind was entirely consumed by the tiny baby in the incubator. "When will he be able to leave the NICU and come back to me?" she asked softly.
"Don't worry. The doctors have assessed him, and he will be out of the incubator in two weeks at the most," Rowan reassured her gently.
Those words only filled Lyra with a profound sense of disappointment. To a mother desperately yearning for her newborn, two weeks felt like an eternity. The thought of waiting that long just to hold her son in her arms cast a shadow over her heart, and her expression instinctively fell.
"Once you are able to get out of bed, you can put on a sterile gown and go in to hold him," he added.
"Really?" Lyra's eyes lit up. But reality quickly sank in. She had undergone a C-section, and her incision was healing slowly. The spark faded from her gaze, replaced by frustration. If she had known this would happen, she would have fought through a natural delivery.
It was all because she had been so terrified right before the birth, screaming and crying as the pain overwhelmed her. Rowan had instantly ordered the doctors to prepare for surgery without a second thought.
Right then, Rowan pulled out his phone, pulling up the hospital's exclusive live feed of the NICU, and handed it to her. "You can watch him whenever you want on here for now."
It was little more than a temporary fix for her aching heart, but it was the only way to soothe her in the present moment.
Days later, dressed in a sterilized isolation gown, Lyra was finally allowed to step inside the NICU. She held her baby with her own two hands and carefully tried bottle-feeding him for the very first time.
Once she had laid eyes on her son, time seemed to fly by. Before they knew it, the day had arrived for the entire family to bring the baby home to Blackwood Manor.
In the backseat of the sedan on the way home, Pip kept his tiny fists curled against his chest, sleeping soundly and peacefully. Lyra had carefully held him for the first part of the drive, but Victoria gently took him away soon after. Citing Lyra's postpartum weakness and incomplete recovery, Victoria stubbornly refused to let her carry him any longer, terrified she would overexert herself.
When they stepped out of the car and made their way into the estate, Rowan scooped Lyra up into his arms, carrying her effortlessly. She wrapped her arms around his neck, constantly straining to peek over his shoulder, her eyes locked onto the infant safely tucked in Victoria's embrace.
"Stop worrying so much. Focus on taking care of yourself first," Rowan murmured softly, looking down at her.
Lyra noticed the small, telling details. Victoria, a woman who strictly adhered to elegant etiquette and perpetually wore flawless high heels, had deliberately swapped them out for soft, non-slip flats today. Charles spent the entire walk holding an umbrella, angling it precisely over the baby's head to ensure not a single ray of sunlight disturbed the sleeping newborn. The family moved with extreme caution; everyone revolved around the baby with the utmost care.
The grand doors of Blackwood Manor stood wide open. Alistair was already waiting in the courtyard, leaning heavily on his cane.
"Can you make the bottle and feed him in here?" Lyra asked immediately.
"Of course, Ma'am," the Nanny smiled, stepping out of the room to gather the supplies.
"You really can't bear to let him out of your sight, can you?" Rowan asked, sitting on the edge of the bed, his gaze filled with warmth. Lyra glanced at him for a brief second before looking away.
Moments later, two nannies returned from the nursery with a tin of formula. One began mixing the bottle while the other cradled Pip.
Lyra watched them, a profound look of happiness washing over her features.
Rowan slowly reached out and took her hand...
He knew he would never hear her say she loved him in this lifetime.
That was fine. He was already deeply content.
Pip carried half of his blood. She loved their son, and just catching the overflow of the love she poured into their boy was more than enough for him.
