When Lyra reached her seventh month of pregnancy, she spent her days curled up on the sofa with her tablet, obsessively scrolling through baby clothes, toys, and maternity supplies. Her digital cart was overflowing, and within minutes, she hit 'checkout' on the entire list.
Sitting beside her, Kayla couldn't help but sigh. "You buy so much stuff, and your husband buys even more. At the end of the day, it's just one baby. Are you really going to use all of this?"
Kayla only worked at the university two days a week now, leaving her with plenty of free time. Lyra had specifically invited her sister-in-law over to Blackwood Manor to get some advice from an experienced mother.
Despite her teasing, Kayla patiently sat with Lyra, offering her opinions on various styles and brands.
"If we don't use it, we can just put it in storage," Lyra said, suddenly remembering that Madeline didn't have kids yet. "Whatever we don't use, I'll just ship over to Madeline's house later. It won't go to waste."
At noon, Rowan rushed home specifically to have lunch with his wife. Kayla stayed to join them at the table, while the twins were being spoon-fed by the household staff nearby. Lyra had a small appetite and was the first to finish her meal. Seeing a drop of soup near her lip, Rowan instinctively pulled a napkin from the dispenser and gently wiped it away.
Kayla watched the quiet exchange and smiled.
Once Lyra stood up to stretch her legs, Rowan sped up his eating. He cleared his plate in a few quick bites, stood up, and offered a polite nod. "Take your time, Kayla."
"Alright," Kayla replied, watching Rowan walk over to the sofa.
Lyra casually mentioned that her legs were aching. Rowan immediately sat down, lifted her legs onto his lap, and began expertly massaging her calves.
"Ma'am, your dessert..." a maid approached holding a bowl of sweet dessert.
Rowan took a small taste and immediately waved the maid away. "There's too much sugar in this. It's bad for the baby's brain development. Make something sugar-free."
The older twin suddenly reached out her little hand for a toy. Lyra handed it over, missing the opportunity to respond immediately.
But Lyra was sensitive enough to catch the underlying melancholy in Kayla's voice. She paused and asked softly, "Kayla, did Caleb do something to upset you?"
"No."
Kayla clearly didn't want to elaborate. She stayed for a little while longer before gathering the twins and taking a car home.
A few days later, Wesley was sent by the Jameson Group to a local university to negotiate a corporate partnership. As he finished the paperwork and strolled across the campus, a familiar silhouette caught his eye. He stopped in his tracks, muttering in pure shock, "Wait, isn't that Mr. Grayson and Mrs. Fairchild?"
Wesley had clearly seen Kayla at Rowan's wedding, and he had bumped into her at various public events since. He had a solid impression of her face. There was absolutely no way he was mistaken.
