"Is she alright?" Lyra demanded frantically. "Did they drug her too?"
"She was faking it. She just wanted to see what they were planning," Rowan explained.
"Those thugs originally intended to take scandalous photos of you and Andrea for blackmail," he added smoothly. "They didn't realize Andrea was a woman."
"Who put them up to this?"
"Thomas Townsend. I've already handed him and his entire family over to the authorities."
Lyra's mind was a complete mess, and a name slipped out before she could stop herself. "Fre..."
What must Frederick have thought when he saw she had vanished?
Desperate to let her family know she was safe, Lyra scrambled to get up. "I need to make a call."
Rowan caught her arm, his predatory gaze darkening. "You're just calling Caleb. Why are you trying so hard to hide from me?"
Lyra realized she had been changed into a nightgown, but she slid out of bed anyway. "My mom will want to hear too. It's just safer this way."
At that very moment, Caleb was a nervous wreck.
Lyra slipped into the bathroom and, as soon as the line connected, she whispered, "Caleb..."
"Lyra? Where the hell are you?" Caleb's furious voice blasted through the receiver. "Frederick and I are still at the police station filing reports! Where did you go?"
Guilt flooded Lyra's chest. "I am so sorry. I'll apologize to him in person later. Something came up and I had to leave."
"..."
After hanging up, Lyra stepped out of the bathroom.
Rowan was sitting on the edge of the bed, his torso still completely bare.
Lyra hesitated before suggesting, "We should get another room."
Rowan paused, turning to fix his intense stare on Lyra as he laid out his terms. "I can help you convince Mrs. Sawyer to donate the billions of dollars to charity, but you have to give me Pip. Do we have a deal?"
Lyra froze, her mind spinning. "I'll sell you the land."
"I don't want the land," Rowan countered smoothly. "I want Pip. Think very carefully before you answer."
The agonizing loss of their unborn child from his dreams was branded into his soul, and he refused to let that tragic nightmare bleed into their reality.
Lyra scoffed internally. He really was nothing more than a ruthless businessman weighing his pros and cons—a total bastard who only cared about his own gain. She decided right then and there to take Frederick's advice and wash her hands of the whole mess.
"Hah," Lyra let out a cold laugh. "I'm done caring. It's not my money anyway, it's Mrs. Sawyer's. If she wants to get scammed, let her get scammed."
"If you don't care," Rowan replied without missing a beat, "then I certainly don't care."
Right on cue, room service arrived with their breakfast. Rowan didn't say another word, simply pulling her into a chair to start eating.
