"Lyra Fairchild!"
Every trace of warmth vanished from Delilah's face, replaced by absolute fury. She rarely raised her voice, let alone got this angry.
Frowning deeply, she scolded, "Who taught you to treat relationships like a game?"
"Why can't you be more like Caleb? He took his relationship seriously, got married, and settled down."
Lyra shot back, "Isn't it completely normal for people to date and break up?"
Delilah retorted, "You are a woman. You're the one who suffers when things go wrong."
"Caleb and I wanted to let you date freely, but since you clearly don't care about your own relationships, I'll be the one making the decisions from now on. I am going to find a man with a matching background and arrange a marriage for you."
Delilah was about to continue when Mr. Lawrence suddenly approached. "Ma'am, Mr. Jameson is here."
Lyra's heart jolted. She had completely not expected Rowan to show up at their door. Instinctively, she felt a strong wave of resistance. She wanted absolutely nothing to do with him. Noticing her hesitation, Delilah instructed her to stay in her room while she went to the front parlor to receive their guest alone.
With the house quiet again, Lyra sat by the window, idly flipping through a book of Buddhist scriptures on her desk. The calm, black text on the serene paper slowly soothed her racing heart.
But it didn't last long. Mr. Lawrence's voice soon echoed from outside her door. "Miss Lyra, your mother has asked you to come out."
Knowing she couldn't hide forever, Lyra let out a defeated sigh. Forcing down her chaotic emotions, she stepped out of her room.
Delilah's expression instantly softened. She offered Rowan a quick apology before rushing upstairs.
The parlor fell into a dead silence, leaving only Lyra and Rowan. The atmosphere immediately thickened, a suffocating, invisible pressure settling over the room.
She didn't want to initiate conversation, so she deliberately focused on the documents. But she could feel his burning gaze pinned to her, making her skin crawl with discomfort.
Rowan watched her desperately avoiding his eyes, his gaze cooling slightly. He slowly lowered his teacup, letting it clink softly against the saucer.
"Why haven't you been answering my calls?"
