Martha's stomach was tied in knots. She knew perfectly well how strict Delilah was when it came to raising her daughter. If she kept her mouth shut now and something even worse happened later, Martha would never be able to handle the blame.
After agonizing over it, she realized she couldn't just turn a blind eye.
Martha eventually went to Delilah and confessed everything.
Upon hearing the news, the warm smile vanished from Delilah's face, replaced by a suffocating weight on her chest.
It wasn't long before Lyra was summoned to her mother's bedroom.
"Are you taking birth control?" Delilah's voice was heavy, her chest tight with disappointment.
Lyra's hands slowly curled into fists at her sides.
When Lyra didn't deny it, Delilah's tone grew sharp with frustration. "You have disappointed me so much."
"Everything I've taught you about self-respect and valuing yourself, you've completely thrown out the window? Those pills are terrible for your health. How could you just take them recklessly? Is that man refusing to take responsibility?"
"No," Lyra argued quietly.
That night, Rowan hadn't used protection. Lyra had been so preoccupied with plotting Jasmine's downfall that she entirely forgot to remind him, forcing her to quietly buy the pills afterward to fix the mistake.
She had thrown the box in the trash, even burying it under some scrap paper to hide it. She never expected it to be found.
Delilah stared at her daughter, her eyes brimming with heartache. "Lyra, how could you be so careless with yourself? You've never disappointed me like this before."
"Tell me, who is it? Is it Zane Sutton? Or Caspian Jameson?"
Lyra's lips parted. "Mom, can you please stop guessing? It has nothing to do with them."
Delilah felt a throbbing headache coming on.
For the next few days, Lyra stayed away from Blackwood Manor.
She also ignored Rowan's phone calls. Her screen lit up time and time again with his name, but she refused to answer, letting the ringtone fade into silence every time. Rowan was swamped with work anyway, constantly flying to different cities on business. He wasn't the type to call every day, and after several unanswered attempts, he eventually stopped trying.
Back home, Delilah slowly began to process the situation. She had come to terms with the idea that her daughter had given her heart to someone whose background might not be particularly impressive.
That had to be why Lyra was keeping it a secret.
Seeing her daughter's unyielding attitude, Delilah ultimately accepted the reality.
A few days later, Delilah said, "If this man isn't Zane, then find a time to bring him over so Caleb and I can meet him. We just want to make sure he's a good person."
"Even if his family is ordinary and he doesn't have a lot of money, it's fine. Our family doesn't care about things like that. We can still throw you a beautiful, grand wedding."
Lyra sighed heavily. "We already broke up."
