Lyra dreamed of a trip to the beach with Jasmine and Caleb from a long time ago.
They had been having so much fun. Caught up in the joy, she would alternate between calling Jasmine her closest friend and teasingly referring to her as her future sister-in-law, genuinely hoping Jasmine would marry Caleb.
But then the sky darkened abruptly. Rowan appeared, wrapping his arm around Jasmine and walking away with her... leaving Lyra standing alone in the wind, utterly devastated and lost.
Slowly, she drifted back to consciousness.
A crisp, masculine scent filled her senses. A strong, warm arm was wrapped securely around her waist, and her back was pressed flush against a broad chest.
Rowan was lying next to her, shirtless, his large hand resting flat against her stomach.
Her mind gradually cleared.
Lyra remembered that he hadn't let her go home the night before. A doctor had come by, examined her, exchanged a few words with Rowan, and left. After that, she had been given a cup of warming honey drink. She had only meant to rest her eyes for a moment, but a heavy wave of exhaustion had pulled her into a deep sleep that lasted until morning.
She carefully checked her phone. It was already past eight in the morning.
Panicking, she opened her messages with her mother.
To her shock, "she" had texted her mom saying she was crashing at Maddie's place.
When her mother had grown worried and tried to video call, he had sent a photo of Lyra sleeping, writing in Maddie's voice: "Mrs. Fairchild, Lyra is already asleep."
Lyra tried to slip out of bed quietly, but the slight movement instantly woke the man beside her.
Rowan's long arm shot out, effortlessly hauling her back against his chest and trapping her in his embrace.
Lyra flushed with embarrassment. "The sheets are stained," she whispered.
Lyra stood rooted to the spot, all the color draining from her face. Were these dresses meant for her?
At that moment, Rowan walked back in. His gaze landed on her, a storm of complex emotions swirling in his eyes.
He hadn't slept well the previous night. Her image had vividly haunted his dreams. She had been wearing a fluffy, sweet tiered dress, her figure showing the slight curve of a pregnancy. She had twirled gracefully in front of him, her eyes crinkling with a smile as she softly asked if the dress hid her baby bump well.
In that dream, a suffocating wave of jealousy had consumed him, tearing him apart. One second, he had irrationally wanted to get rid of the child; the next, he couldn't bear to hurt her. His mind had raced wildly, obsessed with finding out whose baby she was carrying, wanting nothing more than to track the bastard down and tear him to pieces.
He had jolted awake from the nightmare, his heart pounding until reality set in. Thank God she wasn't pregnant.
"Wh-what is it?"
Lyra asked. Seeing his intense stare locked onto her stomach made panic flare in her chest. She instinctively took a step back, her spine hitting the cool wood of the closet. "What do you want?"

The readers' comments on the novel: She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry
What Rowan did in his past life was horrific, and I’m not excusing it, but he truly did everything he could in his second life to repent and atone for what he did to Lyra. At some point, there has to be room for forgiveness and grace. If someone spends their entire life trying to make amends and become a better person, then what does redemption mean if we never allow them a chance to be forgiven? Even someone who has done terrible things deserves the possibility of redemption, and honestly, I want Rowan to be happy too!...
