After the banquet, some of the Harrington relatives went over to chat with Rowan and Waylon.
Leo and Maddie wanted to play a game of cards, so Lyra headed upstairs to her bedroom to search for a deck.
Barely a moment after she stepped inside, a tall figure slipped in behind her. The door clicked shut, instantly cutting off the noise from downstairs. Without a word, Rowan pulled her into a tight embrace, pressing his warm body firmly against hers.
His imposing presence enveloped her as he gripped her slender waist, lowering his head to claim her soft lips...
"Rowan, you weren't invited today."
Repulsion flared in Lyra's chest. She was furious at his audacity and lack of boundaries; he had nearly given her mother a heart attack. Pushing against his chest with all her might, she tried to shove him away.
"Are you mad?" Rowan kept her securely in his arms, resting his nose against her temple. "If Waylon can come, why can't I?"
Lyra glared up at him. "He saved my niece and nephew. What about you? What have you ever done?"
Shoving him back, she reached for the preserved tooth on her desk. "Rowan, do you remember this tooth?"
"I remember," Rowan murmured, his dark gaze locked onto her. It must have hurt terribly back then. To keep her from causing a scene, he had likely said things she hadn't wanted to hear.
"I will always remember what you and Jasmine did to me... You two, ah!" The next second, Lyra felt as if her entire hand was about to be swallowed.
Without warning, Rowan lowered his head, his lips enveloping her fingertips as he took the small tooth into his mouth. With a smooth flick of his tongue, he swallowed it whole.
"What are you doing?!" Lyra froze, equal parts horrified and furious. Her heart hammered wildly as she frantically tried to pry his lips apart.
"It's gone."
Rowan tightened his grip, pulling her flush against him. His eyes were dark and bottomless as he hushed her in a gravelly voice. "I swallowed it. Stop dwelling on the past. Focus on our future."
The sealed bedroom was dead silent.
His arms were locked around her like bands of steel.
Rowan strolled over and casually took a seat beside her. Glancing at the cards, he leaned in a few times to whisper instructions in her ear.
For two straight rounds, with his calm and brilliant guidance clearing the fog in her mind, Lyra easily secured consecutive wins.
Kayla's brother kept glancing at Rowan, beginning to suspect the nature of their relationship. Secretly, he was quite eager to use the Fairchild family as a stepping stone to network with Rowan.
"Mr. Jameson, would you like to play a hand? You can take my seat."
Rowan smiled. "You all go ahead. I need to head back to the office."
Lowering his voice, he murmured to Lyra, "I'm leaving."
Waylon overheard and glanced at them, a slight frown creasing his brow.
He hadn't expected them to get entangled again in this life.

The readers' comments on the novel: She's Too Busy Winning to Watch Him Cry
What Rowan did in his past life was horrific, and I’m not excusing it, but he truly did everything he could in his second life to repent and atone for what he did to Lyra. At some point, there has to be room for forgiveness and grace. If someone spends their entire life trying to make amends and become a better person, then what does redemption mean if we never allow them a chance to be forgiven? Even someone who has done terrible things deserves the possibility of redemption, and honestly, I want Rowan to be happy too!...
