A few moments later, the two men walked out of the tearoom together.
Mr. Sutton was still worried about Maisie's quick temper. The sudden revelation of an illegitimate half-brother, Zane Sutton, returning to claim a share of the family business was bound to cause friction. He feared they wouldn't be able to get along, and even worse, that Maisie would let her anger get the best of her and create a massive scandal.
Rowan Jameson seemed to read his mind, his tone steady and reassuring. "I'll keep a close eye on Maisie."
Knowing that Rowan always kept his word, a weight lifted from Mr. Sutton's chest. "Rowan, hearing you say that puts my mind completely at ease..."
The two men navigated the quiet corridors. Just as they rounded a corner, they unexpectedly ran into two younger people walking toward them.
It was Elara Townsend, who had been forced into attending a blind date, walking alongside a heavily built, unrefined man.
Lately, Elara's family had been relentlessly setting her up with suitors. This particular man's father had helped Thomas Townsend with a construction project in the past. The man had brazenly brought up that old favor, making it painfully obvious he was cashing in on a debt. His blunt, transactional attitude left the Townsend family feeling incredibly uncomfortable.
Elara had only agreed to meet him to save her father's face, but she hadn't expected the guy to be so utterly unattractive.
He was rough around the edges and built like a linebacker.
He was only four years older than her, yet he looked like he had aged an extra decade.
The man's boorish aura was suffocating, clashing terribly with her polished image. She couldn't even bear to look at him.
From the moment she laid eyes on him, Elara had lost her composure. Her ears burned with humiliation, and she felt entirely cornered and embarrassed.
Storming out in a furious huff, she suddenly spotted Rowan. It was like seeing a savior.
Elara hastily jogged up to him, desperately grabbing his sleeve. "Rowan, save me," she pleaded, her voice trembling with panic.
Inwardly, Mr. Sutton couldn't help but criticize her. Jasmine Ford was so graceful and well-mannered—how did she end up with a cousin who lacked any sense of boundaries? Grabbing onto her cousin's partner like that was entirely inappropriate and disrespectful.
From beginning to end, Rowan's expression remained detached and aloof. Without lingering a second longer, he walked away alongside Mr. Sutton.
Only Elara and her rugged blind date were left standing in the corridor.
The man had only come to go through the motions for his father. He hadn't expected this girl to be so wildly sensitive and sharp-tongued. Seeing her look so utterly devastated as she stared at the back of the devastatingly handsome executive, he couldn't help but scoff. "I get it now. You're into the high-status, impossibly gorgeous types."
Elara's face went entirely pale, and she scrambled to defend herself. "What the hell are you talking about! He's just my cousin's fiancé."
The man let out a dark chuckle. "Is he? Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you're dying to take your cousin's place."
Elara's face flushed with alternating shades of fury and embarrassment, and she immediately began cursing him out.
