Sommer seized the opportunity to throw a lavish party, making sure everyone knew Hester was now her adopted daughter.
As long as she became the Sutton family’s daughter, it didn’t matter whether she was the real heiress or not. Her identity would be set—she was Sommer’s child. A clever move. Brilliant, really.
Bryce couldn’t help but tease, “Sabrina, Sommer is a strange one. You’re her daughter too, yet I’ve never seen her show you any affection.”
Stella mumbled, “Maybe Sommer doesn’t like Desmond, so she doesn’t care for his daughter either.”
Bryce stroked his chin thoughtfully. “You might be onto something. When a child is born from a loveless relationship, they’re the ones who end up paying the price.”
He shot Sabrina a sympathetic look. “Sabrina, you’re just too pitiful. Don’t worry—going forward, I’ll have your back. If anyone tries to mess with you, I’ll put them in their place.”
Stella glanced at Bryce, a smile tugging at her lips. “You know, I’m starting to think you’re not so bad after all. You’re actually kind of sweet.”
“I’ve always been a great guy,” Bryce said with a self-satisfied grin.
The two volleyed compliments and jabs back and forth, their playful banter filling the room.
Once their chatter finally wound down, Sabrina spoke up. “I want to see her.”
Stella, unaware of what had happened with Hester, looked puzzled. “See who?”
“Hester.”
Bryce frowned, instinctively stepping aside—not out of sympathy or fear, but because Hester looked far worse than she had days ago. He’d never witnessed this kind of torment before; normally, it was Lyle who handled these things. If Sabrina hadn’t insisted on coming down here, Bryce wouldn’t have bothered to set foot in a place like this.
Lyle barked at the woman lying on the floor, “From now on, when Mr. York or Ms. Sutton ask you a question, you’d better answer honestly. Otherwise, what you’ve suffered these past few days will look like nothing compared to what’s coming.”
He hadn’t even finished speaking when Hester, finally coming to her senses after repeated near-drownings, began to tremble. Her voice was hoarse and frail. “I’ll answer anything—just… make it quick. Please.”
She was terrified after days of being dunked in that barrel. Every time she managed to catch her breath, they forced her back under. Over and over again.
She understood now—she had no chance of making it out alive. All she wanted was for her suffering to end, and fast. That edge-of-death feeling was agony, pure agony.
Each time she thought she was about to die, questions flashed through her mind. She was Sabrina’s sister. Even if she’d wronged Octavia, did she really deserve this kind of torment? Did her mother know what was happening to her?
