Loyce actually gets goosebumps, but then laughs. "It's a miracle to hear you ask for advice. What is it?"
"Helena. You know her."
She raises a brow. "Are you asking me how to steal someone else's girlfriend?"
"I'm asking from a psychological standpoint," he says mildly. "How do I make Swain walk away from her? It can't be an ugly blowout, and I refuse to play the villain who forced them apart."
Loyce bursts out laughing. "I never thought the day would come when I'd see you resorting to this kind of scheming."
He keeps his humble expression. "Please."
Dropping the jokes, Loyce gets down to business. "From my evaluation, Swain is as ordinary as a man gets. He has zero margin for error in his life. Helena has a great career, but I know for a fact her parents are absolute nightmares. They're leeches."
"You could hit him there," she says coolly. "If he's willing to stare down an astronomical extortion fee and stand by her through her family's insanity, then honestly, you should let her go. You'd have to admit he's a man who can give her real happiness. They'd have a good life together."
"I disagree," Morris counters. "He's slapping his own 'ordinary' label on her. She isn't ordinary. She is a musical genius. She shines in a way normal people can't."
"A fact you foolishly waited until now to admit," Loyce mocks, before continuing. "Then force him to face her parents head-on. And while he's reeling, hand him the perfect alternative. Let's see what he chooses."
Morris leans back, crossing his legs. "Define 'perfect alternative'."
"A stable job, a harmonious, supportive family, and decent looks," Loyce smirks. "The exact blueprint of what an ordinary man wants. A flawless girl his parents will absolutely adore."
He raises an eyebrow. "You think he'd throw away a top-tier musician for someone ordinary?"
"You should be praying he makes that choice. Knowing Helena, if he hesitates, she'll walk away without looking back."
She buys groceries, ties her hair back, and throws on an apron. The scent of braised ribs wafts through the small apartment.
The front door clicks open. She pokes her head out of the kitchen, spatula in hand, only to freeze when she sees two curious elders trailing behind her boyfriend.
The air goes dead silent for two seconds.
Swain quickly explains the raffle and their surprise visit. Recovering from the shock, she sets the spatula down, wipes her hands, and forces a stiff, awkward smile. "Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Carter. I'm Helena."
The surprise attack makes her incredibly uncomfortable, but seeing the kind, honest faces of the elderly couple, she bites her tongue.
Martha's jaw drops slightly before she breaks into a beaming, joyful smile. Grabbing her hands, Martha looks her up and down, showering her with praise. "Oh, my goodness, what a beautiful girl! Look at that radiant complexion—you're practically glowing! Swain, you really hit the jackpot!"
