"I'm moving back home," she told him firmly. "But thank you for everything."
Alfie immediately replied, "I can move back with you! I can find a job out there."
"No, Alfie," Giselle said, doing her best to suppress her frustration. "Please, keep your distance. If you want to maintain your peaceful life, stay out of this."
Unfortunately, what Giselle meant as a genuine warning sounded to him like a plea for a hero. Alfie became entirely convinced that he needed to rescue her from her toxic past, cementing his resolve to be with her.
Meanwhile, after running into Giselle, Hank had spent the entire night wide awake. Eventually, he sent a text to Loyce.
[I found her.]
To Loyce, the message meant the gears of fate were finally turning again.
After a moment of thought, she compiled a dossier and sent it to Hank, attaching a single piece of advice.
[Hank, she isn't the naive little girl she used to be. She's a mother and a highly successful professional now. I hope you've learned to take things slow. Take a page out of Morris's book and try being gentle for once.]
If Hank tried to aggressively conquer Giselle like he used to, it would undoubtedly end in disaster.
Hank opened the files and finally saw what the woman he loved had been doing for the past two years.
She had changed her identity and enrolled at the Royal Art Academy. Because of her pregnancy, she had pushed herself until she was nearly in labor, ending up in a life-threatening delivery.
Afterward, she finished her degree as a single mother, traveling the world with her daughter, and continuously supplying Bloomberry with flawless, show-stopping designs.
All of the brand's recent critically acclaimed collections had been secretly designed by her.
Her life without him had been exhausting, but undeniably fulfilling.
In the photos, her smile was radiant. It looked as if... she didn't need him at all.
A sharp ache flared in Hank's chest. He pressed his hand against his heart, unable to accept the reality that she had built a beautiful life that didn't require his existence.
A week later.
Giselle folded the last sweater into her suitcase and took a look around the small apartment she had called home for nearly a year. It was time to say goodbye.
"Mommy, where are we going?" Gigi sat on the bed, swinging her short little legs, hugging a plush teddy bear.
"Back home," Giselle said, walking over to playfully ruffle her soft hair. "We're going back to where Mommy's company is headquartered. I'm taking an official position there."
"Does home have yummy food?"
"Yes, lots of yummy food. All of Gigi's favorites."
The little girl's eyes lit up. "Is Alfie coming too?"
Giselle's hands stilled for a fraction of a second.
For the past week, Alfie had come over every single day, helping her pack, playing with Gigi, and occasionally staring at her with a look of suppressed desperation. She knew exactly what he wanted to say, but she refused to give him the opening.
Some things were just dead ends.
Her phone buzzed.
It was a text from Alfie: [You're leaving tomorrow. Let me buy you and Gigi dinner tonight. One last time. Meet me at the grocery store?]
Giselle stared at the screen for a long time.
One last time.
She sighed and typed back a single word: [Okay.]
Hank sat in the backseat, his dark eyes burning holes through the glass, locked onto the three figures inside.
She pushed the cart while the man walked intimately by her side. They leaned in to talk; they exchanged smiles.
The kid sat in the cart, waving her little hands while the man bent down to make her giggle.
They looked like a family.
They looked like a goddamn happy family.
Hank's fingers dug into the leather upholstery, his knuckles turning stark white.
He watched the man grab a bottle of wine and show it to her. He saw her nod, saw the man's face light up as he placed it in the cart.
Wine.
They were drinking together tonight?
And what exactly was supposed to happen after the wine?
Hank's chest felt like it was caving in, the sheer jealousy suffocating him.
He wanted to rip the car door open.
He wanted to drag that pathetic excuse for a man out into the street and beat him half to death.
He wanted to pull her into his arms.
He wanted to scream at both of them that he was her man, and he was the father of that child.
