"Eat up, Molly. You look so thin lately! Has Swain not been taking good care of you? Just tell me, and I'll set him straight."
Molly held her bowl obediently, flashing a sweet, compliant smile. "Thank you so much. Swain treats me wonderfully, please don't worry."
Swain's father sat beside them, swirling his drink, practically radiating smug satisfaction.
He hadn't achieved much in his own life, but his son had a respectable career and a perfect girlfriend. That was all the bragging rights he needed.
"Molly," he said, setting his glass down and adopting a serious, patriarchal tone. "His mother and I couldn't be happier that you two are together. So, when are you going to make things official? We're not getting any younger, and we'd love to hold a grandchild soon."
Swain, who had been quietly eating, paused his fork.
"Dad, it's way too early for that. What's the rush?"
"What do you mean, 'early'? Look at your age!" his mother immediately fired back. "When we were your age, you were already running around the house."
Molly glanced at Swain. Seeing that he wasn't going to step in, she offered a shy, rosy-cheeked smile. "I think Swain is right, there's no need to rush. But..." She lowered her head modestly. "...I wouldn't mind settling down soon either. I'd love to formally take care of you both."
The words melted Swain's mother's heart. She reached out and affectionately patted Molly's hand. "Such a sweet, wonderful girl."
His father nodded enthusiastically, grinning from ear to ear.
Swain silently picked up some vegetables and chewed. It tasted like cardboard.
In the living room, the TV was playing an entertainment news channel. Swain had turned it on when he walked in, keeping the volume low just for background noise.
