She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 49

The moment the line connected, Brandon's panicked voice flooded through the speaker.

"Hulda, I need a massive favor." He was breathing heavily, his words tumbling over each other in sheer anxiety. "My daughter, Sienna, had too much to drink at a bar and is being held there. She called me to come get her, but I'm out of town at a conference and can't get back in time. I don't trust anyone else to go. You're the only person I could think of."

Hulda had met Sienna before. After Brandon married, he had his one and only daughter. When his wife tragically passed away from illness, it had been just the two of them. Brandon cherished her deeply, but his demanding work schedule often left him unable to keep a close eye on her.

"I'm on it. Send me the address, I'll head over right now."

Sienna was just barely legally an adult. A young girl, drunk and alone in a place like that, was a recipe for disaster.

Hulda didn't waste a single second. The moment he texted the address, she hailed a cab and raced over.

...

Inside the bustling bar, Herbert sat with an emotionless face, waving a waiter over to arrange a designated driver.

Watching him, Justin Jameson narrowed his striking eyes, swirling the liquor in his glass with a teasing grin. "What's the matter? Did Hulda refuse to come pick you up?"

Herbert offered a cold "Mm," his expression utterly unbothered.

Justin laughed out loud. "So she's finally learning how to throw a tantrum?"

Herbert picked up his glass, leaning back lazily against the leather booth, his voice dripping with ice. "Let her throw whatever fit she wants. I'm not humoring her."

Justin smirked knowingly, his tone loaded with mockery. "If you ask me, she's just playing the oldest trick in the book—playing hard to get. Honestly, she's so pathetic. You'd think she'd upgrade her tactics by now."

The guys drinking with them tonight were old college buddies of Herbert and Justin.

They all knew Herbert was married, and they all knew exactly how much he despised his new wife.
