"Alright, that's enough." Hulda cut off the 'for your own good' speech. "I respect your choice," she said plainly.

Without another word, she turned and left, getting into her car to drive to the Civil Registry Office.

Watching the car pull out of the driveway, Callie shook her head in disbelief.

It was Monday morning, right in the middle of rush hour, and traffic was a nightmare.

Hulda rushed as fast as she could and made it to the office five minutes early.

She noticed the line for divorces was incredibly long—even longer than the one for marriages.

She pulled a number and waited in line. The minutes ticked by, but there was no sign of Herbert.

She had texted him the exact time and location the night before.

Refusing to waste her time waiting aimlessly, she pulled out her phone and called him.

He instantly rejected the first call.

She dialed again.

This time, he picked up, his voice dripping with impatience. "Make it quick."

Normally, whenever he snapped at her like this, she would get anxious, quickly apologize, and hang up so he could get back to work.

But today, her voice was perfectly calm. "I'm at the Civil Registry Office. We agreed to finalize the divorce today."

There was a noticeable pause on the other end of the line. "Hulda, if you have nothing better to do, go learn how to be a decent mother from Callie. I don't have time for your childish games."

He hung up.

When she tried calling back, it wouldn't go through.
