Daphne hadn't expected her to be quite so blunt. Her mind instantly went blank with panic.
"Wh-what do you mean 'what is going on'?! I meant exactly what I said on the phone!"
Seeing her stammering and blushing furiously, Melanie was genuinely too shocked for words.
She was really going to pursue Everett!
Melanie was completely baffled.
Judging by her flustered, beet-red face, she was dead serious about this.
"I literally skipped work just to come down here. If you don't tell me the whole truth, are we even best friends?"
Daphne's eyes widened in horror.
"Wait, what? You skipped going to the office... just for me and Everett?"
"Sure did!" Melanie nodded emphatically.
A wave of deep guilt washed over Daphne's face.
She scratched the back of her head, looking incredibly conflicted.
In truth, the main reason she called was just to verify where Melanie stood with Everett.
Even though everyone—herself included—could see that Melanie couldn't care less about him.
Still, until she got verbal confirmation, she didn't dare make a move.
That was the whole point of the call.
And now it was confirmed: Melanie viewed him strictly as a friend.
Nothing more.
That meant the runway was clear for takeoff.
Daphne had practically zero romantic experience growing up, but she had never been the type to sit around and mope.
Now that she realized she had feelings for him, she refused to just sit on her hands.
Even if Everett had a massive crush on Melanie, Melanie clearly didn't return the favor.
Therefore, it was fair game.
If she tried and failed, at least she would know she had given it her best shot.
Daphne led Melanie up to the third floor.
