"I know."
He feigned indifference.
"Our scheduled time is coming up. Do you need me to come out and escort you in, Ms. Royce?"
"No."
Melanie rejected him flat-out, making his chest tighten further.
"I won't be coming to the Lockridge Convalescent Home today. Something came up on my end."
"...What?"
He was absolutely dumbfounded.
"But we had a deal. Aren't you the slightest bit worried about your company's supplements causing severe adverse reactions? Plus, Vice Director Thorne is probably already..."
"You don't need to worry about Vice Director Thorne. I already gave him a call. He said it was perfectly fine and that he's happy to accommodate my schedule."
"..."
Dominic was speechless.
Even Reginald Thorne was practically taking orders from her?!
Then again, it wasn't hard to figure out why.
Everyone at the recent banquet had seen exactly how Minister Lilian treated Melanie.
Even though Lilian was retired, her prestige and connections were still absolute.
No matter how close Reginald Thorne was to the Lockridge family, he would never dare cross Lilian in broad daylight.
What Dominic couldn't wrap his head around was how Melanie had formed such a strong bond with Lilian to begin with.
He had never heard a single whisper of it before.
"That's all, then. My assistant will reach out to reschedule. Goodbye."
Before Dominic could even open his mouth, the call ended, leaving nothing but a dial tone in his ear.
He stood frozen, slowly lowering his phone.
Before him lay the carefully arranged tables, the medical files, and the rows of patients and nurses waiting on standby.
The look on his face twisted into sheer disbelief.
What the hell was this?
