In the end, Holden fired Seraphina, publicly accusing her of betraying the company.
Seraphina left in tears, a convenient scapegoat. Gavin was forced to endure another hour of relentless scolding.
After all, Gavin was the one who had hired her in the first place.
At first, Gavin had tried to defend himself.
But eventually, the fight drained out of him, leaving him in a silent, defeated stupor.
Dominic hovered nearby, making several half-hearted attempts to intercede on Gavin's behalf, only to be shut down by Holden.
"Dominic, don't think you're entirely innocent in this. Gavin spends half his life in a fog, and you just let him drag you into it?"
"If you hadn't saved my life back then, I'd be throwing you out with him!"
"Get out. Both of you, out of my sight!"
Gavin and Dominic were unceremoniously kicked out of the office.
Seeing Gavin looking entirely shattered and despondent, Dominic slung an arm over his shoulder, playing the supportive brother.
"Gavin, don't take it to heart. Grandpa is just lashing out because he expects so much from you."
"Yeah..."
"Come on, let's go grab a drink at The Velvet Orchid. It's on me."
"...No... I just want to be alone for a bit..."
Gavin muttered hollowly, shrugging off Dominic's arm.
As Gavin stumbled away down the corridor, the mask of brotherly concern vanished from Dominic's face. He let out a cold, dismissive scoff.
Pulling out his phone, he fired off a text to Julian:
Things went south. But no one can know about our side deal. You kept your cut, so keep your mouth shut. You know what I mean.
A moment later, Julian replied:
Understood.
Dominic pocketed his phone and exhaled a long breath.
Whatever. The fifteen million was Lockridge money.
And Gavin was the one taking the fall.
Julian had gotten his kickback, tying them to the same sinking ship, so he wouldn't talk anytime soon.
Even though all his scheming hadn't managed to sever the partnership between Melanie and Gabriel Whitmore...
Originally, he assumed Melanie's confidence stemmed from Stellaris PharmaTech's backing.
He had found out early on that Stellaris had expedited a massive shipment of premium foreign fertilizer, likely meant to bail her out.
If Melanie had actually relied on Stellaris to win...
Then Shawn would have been deeply disappointed. It would have meant she was nothing special.
But to his surprise...
"Angel, you really know how to keep things interesting..."
Shawn murmured, resting the flat, cold steel of the butterfly knife against his slightly parted lips.
The blade was freezing.
His breath was hot.
"Tell me, Angel... did you pick up all these incredible tricks from Talia Monroe? Or... are you just a natural-born genius?"
At the word 'genius', another name drifted into his thoughts.
"I wonder who's the bigger genius... you, or Schrödinger's Pill?"
