"Ugh..."
Gabriel stared awkwardly at his pool companion, who was now dripping with beer but desperately trying to maintain a polite smile.
"Beer is... made of grains. Fermented. It's actually great for your complexion."
Saying that, he waved his hand dismissively, signaling for the woman to leave.
Once she scurried off, Gabriel resumed his phone call with Preston.
"No, Preston, you've got it all wrong! I swear on my life, I'm innocent."
As he defended himself, Gabriel strolled over to the window and peered outside.
"Man, look outside. Is it snowing where you are?"
"I want results on that leak by tomorrow. If you mess this up, I'm shipping you off to the Arctic to watch the snow."
Just as Preston was about to hang up, Gabriel's pathetic voice drifted through the receiver once more.
"Preston... how about the Antarctic?"
"Why?"
"Because penguins are way cuter than polar bears."
Before Gabriel even finished the sentence, the line went dead with a harsh beep.
Clutching his phone, his face crumpled into a mask of pure misery.
"Does that mean yes or no?!"
He glanced out the window again; the sun was shining brightly.
Gabriel lightly smacked his own mouth with his phone.
"Why did I have to bring up the snow... What if he actually sends me to the freezing Arctic..."
Images of towering, bloodthirsty polar bears flashed through his mind, and Gabriel turned deathly pale. He immediately dialed Melanie.
"Melanie, help! My brother's going to banish me to the Arctic to watch the snow. Can you beg him to switch it to the Antarctic? The Antarctic has snow too, and I'm terrified of polar bears..."
Without waiting for him to finish his nonsense, Melanie hung up and immediately blocked his number.
Then she went right back to her experiments.
In the VIP pool lounge, Gabriel stared at his screen as if the sky had fallen.
"She... she blocked me?!"
Just as tears of panic welled in his eyes, his phone started ringing again.
"Melanie!"
Why on earth was his brother telling him to hold onto it?
"Alright, man, whatever you say, I'll hold it... So, about the Antarctic..."
Beep—Beep—
The line went dead again. Refusing to give up, Gabriel tried to call back.
But Preston had blocked him too.
Staring blankly at his phone, Gabriel felt his soul leave his body.
"I'm dead. I'm so dead. I'm going to the Arctic..."
Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the city.
Inside the lab.
Melanie had been standing over the lab bench for six straight hours.
Fortunately, the facility was equipped with an advanced climate-control system that regulated both temperature and humidity, so she hadn't broken a sweat.
Just as she was on the verge of successfully cracking the Phyto-Fingerprint Mapping of Apex's Type-L Bio-Fertilizer, her phone suddenly shattered the dead silence of the room.
The caller ID read Nathaniel Royce.
