But it had still been an incredible experience.
Looking back now, the thrill of that night, the heart-pounding passion and absolute ecstasy, still sent a rush of heat straight to her cheeks.
However...
Melanie absolutely did not want to be thinking about any of that.
Because remembering it only brought one undeniable fact to mind—
Preston was spectacular in bed.
They were broken up and practically at war. The last thing she needed was a reminder of his best physical qualities.
Though, to be fair, she didn't have to look hard to find plenty of other things he was good at.
Melanie shook her head vigorously to clear her thoughts.
Preston watched a deep blush crawl down her neck, momentarily at a loss for words.
Their first night together in that themed room at the boutique inn was something he would never forget for the rest of his life.
"I am not going back to a place like that. It completely ruined my judgment last time."
Melanie crossed her arms in flat refusal.
If the inn hadn't been dripping with such a seductive, romantic atmosphere, she honestly doubted she would have given herself to him so easily.
And if they hadn't slept together, they wouldn't have naturally fallen into a relationship.
Especially considering Preston had hidden his true identity from the start and had secretly known about the research project her mother was involved in four years ago.
Melanie snapped her head toward Daphne, eyes narrowing.
"Don't tell me you recommended your friend's place just to help Preston trap me."
Daphne looked deeply offended by the accusation.
"Trap you? Are you kidding me? You're my best friend. Who the hell does he think he is?"
Daphne pointed furiously at Preston.
"He's not even worth a single strand of your hair to me. Why would I help him?"
Melanie's mouth twitched.
"You don't have to make him sound completely worthless."
"Oh, so now you're taking your boyfriend's side!"
Just as he quietly turned to leave, Daphne yelled out.
"Hold it right there. Who said you could leave?"
She shoved Melanie directly into Preston's space.
"I already called ahead to Midnight Retreat. My friend has a room waiting for you two, and it would be incredibly rude to leave her hanging."
Melanie knew damn well that Daphne was lying through her teeth.
There was no way her friend could have predicted she would bump into Preston here.
A room waiting for them? Yeah, right.
Melanie just gave a defeated shrug, deciding not to expose the bluff.
She knew Daphne meant well, even if her methods were wildly overbearing.
Beside her, Preston stood quietly, clearly waiting for her to make the call.
Melanie let out a long sigh.
"Since the room is already booked, we might as well go."
