Soft hands snatched Lily from Jaxson's arms, pulling her into a warm, comforting embrace.
"Be a good girl, Lily. Don't cry. Mommy's here."
Lily rested her head on Phoebe's shoulder and wrapped her arms around her mother's neck.
Seeing the scratches on Lily's arm, Phoebe panicked.
Lily's immune system was much weaker than a normal child's. She suffered from a congenital platelet deficiency and a blood-clotting disorder. Any injury took a long time to heal.
Furious over her daughter's injuries, Phoebe shot a fierce glare at the kindergarten teacher. "What exactly happened? I demand an explanation!"
Jaxson spoke up from the side. "It was Theo's fault. We'll compensate you."
Phoebe was tall, though she had lost a lot of weight. She held Lily tightly against her chest, treating her like a fragile porcelain doll.
So this was her daughter. No wonder she looked so familiar.
But there was another strange feeling. Jaxson felt an inexplicable connection to the child.
Seeing Jaxson looking at Lily, Phoebe's heart skipped a beat.
As if terrified he would snatch the girl away, she shielded Lily protectively.
Phoebe looked up, meeting those dark, deep-set eyes. His brow ridge was prominent, and at first glance, his gaze was chilling and intimidating. Yet, every inch of his face was flawlessly sculpted, exuding an aura of cold detachment.
The boy who was always bullying her daughter was his child?
No, the boy's last name was Quinn.
Or did Jaxson love the child's mother so much that he didn't care about the boy's last name?
A wave of bitterness washed over her, and Phoebe's hands trembled involuntarily. Fueled by a mother's protective fury, she snapped, "Compensate?"
"Theo has bullied my daughter multiple times. How exactly do you plan to compensate us, Mr. Hayes? He has caused my daughter severe psychological trauma!"
This wasn't the first time Theo had picked on Lily.
Jaxson glanced at his nephew, who was standing beside him with his head bowed, too terrified to speak. Then, Jaxson walked toward the car parked outside.
"Get in. We're going to the hospital."
