An Alpha’s Despair-2

Once Azriel and the guards disappeared into the distance, Markus exhaled heavily, exhaustion creeping in but still overshadowed by the weight of responsibility. He pulled out his phone and called his mate, Kaia.

Markus!” Kaia’s voice crackled through the speaker, panic in her tone. “Oh my goddess, are you alright? What’s happening? Are you good?”

Markus rubbed his temples, his voice steady but strained. “Yes, we’re good, Kaia. We bring victory home. The lycans are defeated.”

There was a pause, followed by Kaia’s deep exhale of relief. “Thank the Moon Goddess,” she/

whispered, clearly trying to hold back her tears. “But… you don’t sound right. What happened? Who

was injured? Or…” Her voice caught, with dread around her words. “…who died?”

Markus took a deep breath. “Except for a few serious injuries, everyone’s mostly unscathed. We’ll be fine, but…”

Kaia’s voice sharpened, her tension mounting. “But what, Markus? What happened?”

Markus swallowed hard before replying. “We won the war because of Lora. She unleashed her Omega Fury, completely. She eliminated the lycan army. All of them.”

There was a beat of silence, then Kaia’s voice cracked with both awe and confusion. “That’s… that’s

incredible, Markus. Isn’t it? She saved us all!”

“Yes,” Markus said quietly, his voice tinged with sadness. “But in the process, Lora gave everything.

She drained herself to protect all of us, and now… she’s not waking up. We’re not sure if she will. Azriel is on his way back to the pack with her, but it’s not looking good.”

“No…” Kaia’s voice trembled, the gravity of the situation sinking in. “Oh goddess, no… What do you

mean she’s not waking up? Is she…?”

“She’s alive, sort of,” Markus clarified, though his voice was thick with the uncertainty that weighed

on him. “We don’t know what’s happening to her. She’s in limbo, or something close to it. Azriel’s

frantic, and we need to be there for him-for both of them. Once he gets back, I need you all to be

ready. They’ll need the pack’s support more than ever.”

Kaia gasped, clearly shaken by the news. “Of course, Markus. I’ll gather everyone. We’ll be there. Moon Goddess, I can’t believe this is happening…” Her voice faltered, overcome by the gravity of the moment. “Lora did this… for all of us. We owe her everything.”

“We do,” Markus agreed, his own voice carrying the weight of both admiration and sorrow. “But

listen, I’m going to be delayed. There’s still the aftermath to deal with: the cleanup, making sure no traces of this battle remain for humans to find. I need to erase all the trails, get rid of anything that could lead back to us. I’ll join you as soon as I can, but it’ll take time. I’ll contact you when I’m on my

way.”

“Okay, love,” Kaia replied, her voice steadier now, though still filled with emotion. “Just be safe. We’ll be here, waiting for Azriel and Lora. And for you.”

Markus ended the call, his gaze lingering on the battlefield. He clenched his fists, jaw tight.

A few hours later

Azriel rushed into the heart of the Stormheart pack, Lora cradled tightly in his arms. His pace was frantic, his face twisted in agony, and the warriors who had accompanied him from the battle parted to give him space. The atmosphere in the pack was tense, a mix of relief that the lycan threat had been eliminated and profound anguish for the state of their beloved Luna. Everyone knew Lora had sacrificed herself for them, and now her fate hung in the balance.

As soon as Azriel entered the infirmary, Doctor Luigi and Mary were ready for him. Their faces were drawn, somber, as they immediately took Lora from his arms and connected her to the machines. The soft beeping of the machines was the only sound in the room, but it brought little

comfort to Azriel.

Lora looked so fragile lying there, her body eerily still, and the sight of her like this nearly broke him. He sank into a chair beside her bed, unable to take his eyes off her pale face. His hand reached out to grasp hers, and he held on tightly, as if the strength of his grip alone could tether her to the

world of the living.

Mary glanced at Doctor Luigi, who met her gaze with a grim nod. The doctor turned to Azriel, his expression heavy with sorrow. “We’re doing all we can,” Luigi said softly, though the weight of

those words fell like stones. “But it’s up to her now. She’s fighting a battle we can’t see.”

Azriel’s throat tightened, and for a moment, he could barely speak. “What does that mean?” * he

rasped, his voice thick with desperation. “She’s strong, stronger than anyone I know. She’ll make it, right?”

Mary’s hand rested on Azriel’s shoulder. “She gave everything she had, Azriel. Her body, her spirit, they’re both exhausted. She’s alive, but she’s not here… only the Moon Goddess can decide now and Lora’s fighting spirit.”

Azriel’s heart clenched, and he looked down at Lora, his tears finally spilling over. He leaned forward, resting his forehead on the back of her hand. The room was quiet, the air heavy with

unspoken grief. Outside, the pack waited anxiously, torn between the joy of victory and the fear

that they might lose their Luna.

Hours passed, and the oppressive silence only deepened. The machines kept their steady rhythm,

but Lora didn’t stir. Azriel’s hope slowly crumbled as the minutes dragged on. His mind replayed every memory, every laugh, every smile, every moment they had shared. The bond between them, once so vibrant, now felt faint, as though it were slipping away.

Finally, the weight of despair became too much to bear. Tears filled his eyes, and he could no

longer hold them back. His body trembled as he closed his eyes, clutching her hand/so tightly his knuckles turned white. “Moon Goddess,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “Please… bring her back

to me. I’ll do anything. I’ll take her place if that’s what it takes. But please… don’t take her, she

deserves better.”

He bowed his head, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he poured every ounce of his love, his

pain, and his hope into that prayer. “She didn’t deserve this. She gave everything for all of us. Don’t let it end like this. Please… bring my mate back.”

Azriel’s tears fell onto Lora’s hand, and he remained there, lost in his anguish, as the minutes

stretched into an eternity. Mary and Doctor Luigi exchanged glances, their own hearts heavy, but

they stayed silent. There was nothing more they could do.
