Inside Man-1

Inside Man-1

Councilman Carter arrived at his pack’s estate with a deep scowl etched across his face. The drive from the Council meeting had done nothing to soothe his nerves; if anything, it had only deepened his foul mood. He stormed into his office, slamming the door behind him. The shadows in the room seemed to cling to him, amplifying the dark thoughts swirling in his mind.

Just as he reached his desk, his phone rang, the shrill sound piercing the silence. His heart skipped a beat, recognizing the unlisted number. With a grimace, he answered the call. A cold, authoritative voice cut through the line, offering no greeting, only a single word: “Update.”

Alpha Carter took a long, steadying breath before replying. “The attack was initially planned for tomorrow,” he began, choosing his words carefully. “But something, or someone, warned them of a potential ambush. The Werewolf King is holding back, conducting additional checks.”

There was a heavy pause at the other end, followed by the voice’s chilling question: “And what have you done to solve this matter?”

Carter swallowed hard, his mouth suddenly dry. He knew he was treading on dangerous ground. “I tried to push for the attack, but the King refuses to proceed without further intelligence. He’s relying on these…unrevealed sources more than the Council’s advice.”

The voice on the other end remained silent for a moment, and Carter could almost feel the icy gaze of his unseen interlocutor piercing through him. Then, in a low, menacing tone, the voice responded, “Don’t forget our deal, Alpha Carter. You came to us. Now it’s your time to deliver if you want power and a place at the table when we take over all the packs. So don’t forget your place, and what’s at stake. Sort this mess out…now. And find out who the source is.”

The call ended abruptly, leaving Carter with a sense of foreboding that seemed to seep into his very bones. He dropped the phone onto his desk and sank into his chair, his mind racing with fear and regret. He had always prided himself on being a strong leader, an Alpha who commanded respect and obedience. After all, he was the Head of the Council. But now, for the first time, he felt like a puppet on a string, manipulated by forces far more powerful and malevolent than he had anticipated.

His thoughts drifted to his daughter, Alice, who was the reason for all this mess, and his heart ached with the weight of his decisions. He had started down this dark path for her, out of a desperate desire to secure her future and protect her from the consequences of her own reckless behavior. But now he wasn’t so sure that he had made the right choice.

Alice had always been the apple of his eye, especially after he lost his Luna so many years ago. As a single father, Carter had tried to compensate for the absence of Alice’s mother by spoiling her

with everything her heart desired. He indulged her every whim, from extravagant parties to

expensive vacations and shopping trips, hoping to fill the void in her life with material wealth.

But somewhere along the way, things had spiraled out of control. What he had initially dismissed

as youthful excesses turned into a full-blown addiction. Shopping became Alice’s escape, her

obsession. It was only when Carter discovered that she had been siphoning money from the

pack’s funds to fuel her addiction that he realized just how deep the problem ran. The pack’s financial reserves had been drained day after day, and Carter had been forced to liquidate multiple assets just to cover the damages when he discovered the maxed out credit cards and amount of

debts she accrued.

Desperate to save his daughter, he had admitted her to a specialized clinic, hoping that professional help would curb her habits. For a while, it seemed to work. Alice emerged from the

clinic looking healthier, her old spark returning. But it didn’t take long for her to relapse, her lavish

tastes discouraging potential suitors with her extravagant tastes and isolating her further from the pack. What was worse is that she started to lie and steal to fund her addictions. As a result, they

had to borrow money and take collaterals to cover the obvious gaps, and as he was a well known businessman, he could not go to the bank for it, so he had to get the money from loan sharks. It

did not take long for the situation to become unsustainable.
