Rest in Peace-2

Lora smiled warmly. “It was my pleasure. You’re family.”

As the night deepened, the remaining guests filtered out, leaving a quiet serenity in the air. The

weight of the day’s events hung heavily, but there was a sense of resolve and unity among them.

Azriel, still grappling with the revelations, took a deep breath. “Kaia, if you need anything, don’t

hesitate to call me. I’ll be close by. I am just so proud of you, your endurance, resilience and inner

strength. It was not always easy between us but rest assured that no matter what, you will always have my support, little sister.”

Kaia nodded, her eyes soft with gratitude. “Thank you, Azriel. Your support means everything to me. Thank you for your patience with me. I know it was not always easy, but we will stick together.

We are family!”

As evening descended, everyone withdrew to their rooms, seeking the solace of rest after a tumultuous day. Once in their bedroom, Markus looked conflicted, his brow furrowed with inner turmoil. Kaia, sensing his unease, squeezed his hand gently.

“Go, my love,” she said softly. “It’s okay.”

Markus looked at her, his eyes filled with pain and uncertainty. “But-”

Kaia interrupted him, her voice steady and understanding. “I know you want to see her body and speak to your father. It’s normal. Despite everything that happened, she was your mother, and this is a deep wound. You lost a parent today, and I totally understand.”

Markus felt his emotions choking him. After what happened at the Blue Altar, he had bottled up all

his feelings, setting them aside to take the necessary actions. But now, everything came rushing

back, stabbing his heart with pain. “But she tried to hurt you, to hurt our baby. If we hadn’t been in

time, it would have been you instead of her.”

Kaia smiled sadly and hugged him. “I know, my love, but you can’t erase the fact that, good or bad, she was your mother, the person who birthed you and was there for you. And your father needs

you right now. Go to him and take your time. I’m not going anywhere. I know you need to do this.”

Markus’s voice trembled as he hugged her tightly. “Oh Kaia, I am in so much pain. I feel so betrayed.”

“I know, my love,” Kaia replied, her voice filled with empathy. “I know.”

With one last look at Kaia, Markus made his way towards the morgue, which was heavily guarded by his Praetorian Guard. As he entered, he found his father collapsed in a chair next to his wife’s

body. The Queen’s body had been cleaned of blood and arranged, appearing almost as if she were merely sleeping. The sight stabbed at Markus’s heart, recalling the hate and venom she had shown earlier.

His father looked up, appearing lost and aged by almost fifty years. Markus approached him and embraced him, holding him as his father broke down in his arms, sobbing.

“Oh, son, how could she do that? I am so sorry, my son. It’s my fault,” his father wept.

Markus cut him off gently but firmly. “It is not your fault, but hers alone. She chose this road, father, all by herself.”

The former king sobbed harder, his body shaking with grief. “I should have seen it, should have known.”

Markus held him tighter, feeling the weight of his father’s sorrow. “You couldn’t have known. She

hid it well from all of us.”

For a long time, they stayed like that, father and son, united in their grief and the shared weight of betrayal. Finally, his father pulled away slightly, looking at Markus with tear-filled eyes.

“What do we do now?” he asked, his voice breaking.

“We move forward,” Markus replied, his voice steady. “We honor her memory for the good she did, but we do not let her actions destroy us. We will tell the packs that she succumbed to an older disease that she had been suffering for many years. We have to be strong, for the pack, for our family. We can’t afford a scandal, especially now with the entire Lycal situation and pandemic. Also, we need to find the culprit and punish him accordingly.”

His father nodded slowly, the weight of his grief still heavy but tempered by the resolve in Markus’s voice. “You are right, my son. We must be strong and play this in a smart way.”

Markus helped his father to his feet, and they both looked down at the Queen’s body one last time. “Rest in peace, Mother,” Markus whispered. “May the Moon Goddess judge you fairly.”

As they left the morgue, Markus felt a sense of closure, albeit a painful one. He knew the road ahead would be difficult, but with Kaia by his side and the support of his father and friends, he was ready to face whatever came next. Together, tomorrow they will reveal his mother’s accomplice and will make him pay.
