Layzal froze in surprise at Markus’s words. “Let me get this clear: the Goddess Gift is actually a

healer?”

Markus nodded. “Yes, the person who can fight this is a trained doctor with the ability to defeat the infection. But to do this safely, she will need her mate next to her at all times as they work

together. Otherwise, it would not be safe for her.”

Layzal frowned, his brows knitting in concern. “This complicates things in healing the infected.”

“I know,” Markus replied. “The only way we can stop this pandemic is to work together.”

Layzal agreed with a slow nod.

“Have you succeeded in identifying the source? Do you have any suspicion about who could be behind it? We tried on our side, but our attempts were unsuccessful.” Markus asked him.

“Based on the pattern of infection,” Layzal said, “we’ve realized that the disease is coming from the Canadian side. Our suspicion is of the Dark Lycans.”

Markus’s eyes widened. “Dark Lycans? They were eradicated a long time ago. Their race is extinguished. We made sure of that.”

Layzal shook his head. “The Dark Lycans are the only ones who would want revenge on both our species. If you remember correctly, the last time we were allies it was seventy years ago when we defeated them and killed them all. My informants told me several months about the existence of a group of their species who stayed in the shadows till now.”

Markus completed the thought. “If this is true, it makes sense, as we’ve identified that the disease is caused by dark magic. Which only the Dark Lycans are known to master. But if they still exist, then we are in trouble and need to deal with them urgently.”

“Dark magic, damn it!” Layzal cursed in anger.

“Then there’s no time to rest,” Markus said, urgency in his voice. “Send us the reports on how many are infected, and let’s put our councils together. Enforce a full quarantine. Based on the reports received, we will work on a healing schedule.”

Before leaving, Layzal offered a piece of advice. “Markus, if the Dark Lycans find out about your Goddess Gift, she will become their primary target. Guard her well. I’ll send you extra trained support. Top of my rank.”

“I have what I need,” Markus began, but Layzal cut him off.

Markus nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. “I’ll make sure she’s protected. But if

you insist on her protection, I suggest sending some female fighters as her mate is extremely

possessive.”

Kaia, who had been silently listening, stepped closer to Markus. “We’ll get through this together

she said, her voice steady despite the weight of the situation.

Markus took her hand, squeezing it reassuringly. “Together,” he echoed.

With a final nod, Layzal left in a blur, followed by his entourage, and Markus turned to Kaia. “We need to move quickly. Let’s gather the council and prepare for an emergency meeting. Also, we need to speak urgently with your brother and Lora.”

Kaia nodded. “I agree.”

As the helicopter soared through the sky, carrying Markus and Kaia back to the Stormheart Pack, Kaia turned to Markus with a mixture of curiosity and trepidation. “Tell me more about this threat, the Dark Lycans,” she said. “I know about their existence from history books and what I’ve learned in school, but it was just a brief overview.”

Markus sighed, running a hand through his hair. “This is one of the darkest chapters in werewolf history,” he began. “When my father was in power, he formed a coalition with King Ozul, the Vampire King, to destroy the Dark Lycans.”

Kaia looked intrigued and concerned. “What was the real reason?”

“The Dark Lycans were superior in their abilities,” Markus explained. “They could manipulate dark magic, which made them incredibly powerful. But with time, because of their superiority, they wanted to fully enslave and dominate all supernaturals. And after that, they aimed to enslave humans, whom they considered beneath them, mere pests, second class citizens.”
