The next morning, Markus called his father into his private office before the Council meeting. As

they greeted each other, the tension in Markus was palpable.

“Father,” Markus began, his voice steady but laced with determination, “today I am forced to raise the topic of the Royal Courtship in the Council. I agreed to go ahead with a chosen mate, but I hate

when others are meddling, including Mother.”

Anton looked surprised, “What happened, son? Your mother?”

Markus took a deep breath, then told him everything: about his imprinting on Kaia Storm, how Queen Tonya manipulated the situation, and the tea gathering fiasco. His father’s face registered

disbelief.

“I never believed she would take it this far. I knew that she always disliked the Storm family, but I never believed that she would take it that far,” Anton said, shaking his head.

“Kaia is the one, Father,” Markus said firmly. “Stinger and I are quite decided in her favor, and nothing will stop us from getting her as my mate.”

Anton nodded, his expression thoughtful. “You have my support. What about the Royal Courtship?”

“I’ll declare it invalid,” Markus said. “The rules were broken by Mother, and in the rules are mentioned that if any deviation from the traditions is made, this would conclude the competition

without any obligations.”

“She will be furious,” Anton warned.

“I stopped caring the moment she tried to manipulate me and match me with one of her drones. Plus, you taught me that no one is above the law, not even a former queen. I just wanted to give you a heads-up. You saw that last night I gave her the chance to come clean, and she played the innocent. She really put me in an impossible situation.”

Anton placed a hand on Markus’s shoulder. “Follow your principles, son. If you truly love Kaia, go after her. You deserve happiness. Your life has already had too many sacrifices not to find some joy. Plus, your mother needs to learn that she can not always twist the facts in her favor. It is my mate and I love her, but sometimes I wish she could just mind her own business.”

Markus felt a surge of gratitude. “Thank you for your support, Father. Now, let the show start.”

The council meeting was held in a grand chamber, and as Markus and Anton entered, the murmurs ceased, and all eyes turned toward them. Queen Tonya, sitting with a poised smile, looked

expectantly at her son.

Markus took his place at the head of the table. “Thank you all for gathering today. I have called this

meeting to address the Royal Courtship.”

The council members exchanged curious glances. Markus continued, “It has come to my attention

that the process of this courtship has been manipulated and unfairly influenced.”

Tonya’s smile faltered slightly, but she remained silent. Markus went on, detailing the pre-screening tests and the tea gathering, emphasizing how these actions broke the ancient guidelines.

“Such manipulations cannot be tolerated,” Markus declared. “Therefore, I am declaring the current Royal Courtship invalid.”

A collective gasp echoed through the chamber. Tonya’s eyes flashed with anger. “Markus, you can’t be serious and make such accusations without a basis. I don’t know from where you heard such rumors, but I assure you that they are just fabrications. Plus, I could not find in the Royal Library any book that mentioned that the Royal Courtship is invalid if any of its rules are altered. Actually, I could barely find any book on the matter, there is too little documentation left.

“I am very serious, Mother,” Markus replied, his tone cold. “The integrity of our traditions is paramount, and I can prove it.”

As the council chamber settled into an uneasy silence, Queen Tonya stood firm, her voice sharp.” This is not true, Markus. There is no book in the library that mentions that the courtship is invalid if

the rules are altered.”

Markus met her gaze, unyielding. “I assure you that I speak the truth, Mother. And I can prove it. Considering the importance of this matter, I made sure to familiarize myself with the rules and the existing books from the Royal Archive. Are you sure you couldn’t find any as last time I checked there were several available.” He placed an old tome on the table, its pages yellowed with age. Opening it on the relevant page, he passed the book to the Council members. “See for yourselves.”
