Courtship Rules-3

“Of course, Mother,” Markus replied firmly. “This is a priority for me. Shall we?”

Markus led his parents into his study, closing the door behind them. Once they were seated comfortably, Queen Tonya asked, “What do you want to know, Markus?”

With a smile, Markus replied, “Everything.”

The Queen’s composure faltered momentarily. She nodded and began explaining the arrangements, the rooms, the general setup, but Markus interrupted her.

“Mother, please, let’s not play this game. I need to know the important elements, such as the

timeline and who are the selected girls to attend, for the beginning.”

Queen Tonya, visibly flustered, stated, “It will be a three-week competition where the girls will be assessed and evaluated based on their abilities.”

Markus nodded and asked, “Who are the girls?”

“I can provide you with a list,” she responded.

“And how were these girls selected?” Markus inquired.

The Queen hesitated slightly before answering, “Of course, we considered everyone who expressed interest.”

Markus could feel her dishonesty. “Isn’t it strange, then, that I’ve heard about some eliminatory

pre-screening testing?”

The Queen paled a bit but maintained her composure, “Oh son, there is no such thing.”

“That’s odd,” Markus said, “because I’ve heard rumors from some contestants about health

checks, even fertility and purity tests.”

King Anton, now enraged, turned to her, “Tonya, is this true? This is insane!”

“Definitely not true, my dear,” the Queen insisted, but Markus was determined not to let her off the hook. He could feel her lies in his chest and he could barely contain himself, but decades of training made him a good actor.

“I’ll investigate this,” he said. “We don’t want the wrong rumors circulating in society. If any of the ancient guidelines were altered, this could mean we could declare the Royal Courtship invalid.”

The Queen’s face turned ashen. “What? Where did you hear about this?” she asked.

Markus smiled at her. “Because I studied the rules, Mother, clearly. We need to be an example for

everyone, and we definitely want to respect our ancient traditions.”

His mother stood frozen in place, like a deer in the headlights. Markus smiled reassuringly at her. “Don’t worry. We’ll discuss more of this with the Council tomorrow. Thank you, Mother, for all your support.”

As they left the study, Queen Tonya felt as though all the blood had drained from her face. Her husband, Anton, asked, “Are you okay, my dear?”

She replied, “I just have a headache. Probably all this stress and arrangements with this

competition.”

Once inside her chambers, she mind linked Ricky, ordering him to retrieve any books from the

library about the courtship on an emergency basis tonight. After closing her mind link, she /

trembled in suspense. Today, she had been over the moon when that pest, Kaia Storm, left the

castle, especially as her spies reported to her that Markus had tried to convince her to stay. But

she never expected Markus to become involved in the competition details now. Nonetheless, she

would not let him ruin this for her. She knew what was best for him.

As she sat in her chamber, Queen Tonya’s mind raced. The intricacies of the Royal Courtship had

been her master plan, and she had meticulously planned every detail. Now, with Markus scrutinizing every aspect, she felt her control slipping. She couldn’t let that happen. Not when she was so close to securing Angelica as the future queen. She clenched her fists, determined to

out-maneuver Markus and keep her plans intact. She knew that no matter what, she must prevail.
