“It’s so good to see you okay,” Lora said, her eyes sparkling with genuine joy.

“Thank you, Lora. It means a lot,” Kaia replied shyly.

They took their seats at the table. When Kaia’s eyes met Markus’s, it felt like everything and

everyone around her faded. She got lost in his deep blue gaze, while warmth started spreading through her chest. Their eye contact was abruptly interrupted by Queen Tonya herself.

“Good morning, Lady Kaia,” Queen Tonya greeted her, a polite smile on her face. “How are you feeling now?”

Kaia straightened up and replied politely, “Better, thank you, Your Majesty.”

The Queen nodded as she looked in her direction with an intense look. “That’s good news. I’m

pleased that the royal healers were able to assist you.”

“I’m very grateful,” Kaia said, bowing her head slightly.

After a few more exchanges around the table, the Queen turned her attention to Azriel. “How is your pack, Alpha Azriel?”

Azriel replied politely, updating the Queen on the pack’s current status. Then she asked, “Did you

arrive to take your sister home?”

Before Azriel could respond, Markus intervened. “Kaia will remain at the royal castle for a while longer, to ensure she is fully recovered.”

The Queen nodded, replying in an affected tone, “Of course, of course. Anything we can do to help.”

Despite her polite words, Kaia felt a strange vibe from the queen. Sierra, her wolf, echoed her unease. “Something’s off about her,” Sierra murmured in Kaia’s mind.

“Yes,” Kaia replied in her mind, “she is too friendly to someone that she has just met.” Despite being for years in solitude, this doesn’t mean that she was isolated from gossip or news. Everyone was nicknaming Queen Tonya the Ice Queen. She was always stern and dominant, always with a slight 1 air of superiority, who enjoyed being the center of attention. Also, she had the reputation of being

quite a snob and surrounding herself only with people that had something that she needed or found interesting.

Kaia ate her breakfast quietly, observing the interactions around the table. She noticed the Queen’s several gazes at her, which made her feel uncomfortable. It felt as though the queen was

scrutinizing her, evaluating her every move.

Once breakfast ended and everyone began to disperse, the Queen approached Kaia. “It would be

wonderful to meet for tea one of these days while you remain at the castle,” she said with a smile

that didn’t quite reach her eyes, and that Kaia found unnerving.

Kaia nodded with a polite smile. “Of course, Your Majesty. I’d be honored.”

Queen Tonya nodded, before addressing her in an inquisitive tone while lifting one of her

eyebrows, “Interesting choice for a morning dress.”

Kaia looked at the Queen’s impeccable attire and smiled tightly. As the Queen walked away, Kaia felt a mix of anxiety. Despite the polite words, Kaia felt really uncomfortable in front of this

woman.

After breakfast, Kaia stayed with Azriel, Lora, and Markus. Azriel watched her with a concernéd

look, ignoring the intense gaze Markus was sending his way.

“Are you sure you want to stay here, Kaia?” Azriel asked, his voice laced with worry.

Kaia offered him a reassuring smile. “A few more days should be okay, Azriel. I need this time to fully recover before returning to the pack.”

Azriel nodded, though a curious glint remained in his eyes. He stepped forward and pulled Markus aside, engaging him in a serious conversation. Kaia watched them briefly before turning to Lora,

who was smiling warmly at her.

“I’m so happy to see you better, Kaia,” Lora said, her voice soft and filled with warmth.

Kaia felt a surge of gratitude. She heard from Markus that Lora was the one who healed her physical wounds. “Thank you, Lora. I don’t know what I would have done without you. You fixed my

body,” she said, tears welling up in her eyes.

Lora gently squeezed Kaia’s hand. “You’re important to all of us. We’re relieved to know you’re

awake, especially Asher. He’s always asking about you.”

Kaia’s eyes became wet with emotion, recalling the little stubborn pup who had invaded her

garden and brought light into her loneliness. “I miss him too,” she admitted, her voice trembling.
