Hidden Schemes-1

Queen Tonya entered her bedroom where her husband, the ex-King Anton, was changing out of his formal attire. She walked over to her vanity mirror, beginning her nightly beauty ritual. She brushed her hair in slow, deliberate strokes, her mind clearly preoccupied. After a few moments, she let out

a deep sigh.

Anton noticed her distress. “Are you alright, Tonya?” he asked, his voice tinged with concern.

Tonya paused, her brush still in hand. “I’m just worried about Markus,” she replied, meeting her

husband’s eyes in the mirror.

Anton raised an eyebrow. “Why? What’s troubling you?”

“It’s his rejection of his fated mate,” Tonya said, placing the brush down and turning to face Anton. “He’s become the talk of the people. Everyone is worried about the future of the royal family and its legacy, and our enemies are lurking in the shadows.”

Anton sighed, shaking his head. “There’s nothing to worry about, Tonya. Markus is strong and capable. He is unmatched to any of our enemies.”

“He’s almost 100 years old, Anton,” Tonya countered, her voice tight with worry. “For our species, with an average living age of 280 to 300 years, it’s concerning. Especially since the council raised the same topic in the last meeting.”

Anton frowned. “Markus mentioned to me that he was considering a chosen mate, so there should

be no issues.”

Tonya nodded, her expression easing slightly. “That’s good news, but the selection will be difficult.”

“What do you mean by selection?” Anton asked, his brows knitting together in confusion.

Tonya let out a small, ironic laugh. “It seems you’ve skipped this part of protocol, my dear. For the royal family, a Royal Courtship must take place.”

Anton’s eyes widened in shock. “A Royal Courtship? That’s an ancient law and no one has used it

since forever.”

“Exactly, but all the previous kings had their fated mate next to them,” Tonya said, a smirk playing

on her lips. “We need to uphold the traditions and legacies. The chosen mate must be evaluated, and only the most worthy should be chosen for the role.”

Anton froze, the weight of her words sinking in. “This is an ancient law, don’t be ridiculous. Is this

truly necessary?”

“Absolutely,” Tonya insisted. “The council and the people need to see that we are following the traditions. It’s about the legitimacy of the royal line. Markus must choose his mate wisely, and the

process must be transparent and traditional.”

Anton looked at her, conflicted. “Do you understand the pressure this will put on him? The position

“I do,” Tonya said softly. “But it’s for the good of the kingdom. His future mate must prove herself.

worthy, not just as a mate, but as a Queen. The chosen one will stand beside him on the throne,

representing our legacy and future.”

“But what if he already has someone in mind?” Anton replied, conflicted.

Tonya smiled amused, “Then, she should prove herself worthy of his acceptance.”

Anton sighed deeply, feeling the weight of their responsibilities. “I just hope Markus understands

and agrees with this.”

“He will,” Tonya said with a determined nod. “He must. It’s his duty.”

The room fell into a heavy silence, the gravity of the situation sinking in. Anton knew they were

placing their son in a difficult position, but he also understood the importance of upholding their traditions and ensuring the future of the royal line.

After their conversation, Queen Tonya lay in bed, her husband’s rhythmic breathing indicating he had already drifted into sleep. A slow, satisfied smile crept across her face in the darkness. Earlier that evening, her trusted employee and spy, Ricky, had provided her with a piece of information

that had shaken her to her core. Ricky was her ears and eyes and kept her informed on everything

that was happening inside the castle and outside. He took her for a walk, and after she strolled

through the hallways, Ricky pointe to her a shocking scene: her son, Markus, was kissing that

cursed girl, Kaia Storm.

Tonya’s initial reaction had been one of disbelief and fury. How could Markus, her pride and joy, the

King, be entangled with someone as damaged and lowly as Kaia? The news had struck her like a

thunderbolt. Out of all the eligible women in the realm, her son had chosen to focus his attention

on someone she considered damaged goods.
