The incendiary bombs and artillery shells covered each other. The shells poured down frantically on the mutated animals, as if they cost nothing.”
Round after round.
The whole mountain shook from the blasts.
Even the walls inside the rooms trembled and shed dust.
The civilians huddled together, holding on to one another for warmth and comfort. They kept telling themselves that their base leader would never abandon them. He would drive the mutant creatures back.
Just as cheers erupted from the front lines, a giant bean sprout suddenly burst up inside the base. It shot straight through a man’s body, its roots burrowing into his abdomen. Everyone could see his blood being rapidly drained away.
“H-help me…” The man being drained by the bean sprout lay on the ground in agony, reaching out a hand toward the people around him for help.
Someone couldn’t bear to watch and wanted to save him, but another person grabbed his arm.
“Are you crazy? What if you get infested too?” the person said. “Haven’t the base’s big screens been repeating it non-stop? Only people who’ve eaten human flesh attract these mutant plants and animals and become their nutrients. He’s getting infested because he must’ve eaten human flesh in the past!”
“Exactly! Quick, call the patrol!”
Someone immediately ran to report it. Before long, a patrol team arrived and surrounded the mutant plant.
The patrol captain asked, “Has anyone else come into contact with this mutant plant?”
“No, no! We all stayed far away!” Everyone shook their heads.
“Stand back!” The patrol leader, fully suited up in protective gear, raised a flamethrower and aimed at the bean sprout.
But the bean sprout, having already fed on a human, didn’t flinch. It lashed out at the patrol captain.
Smack!
The patrol captain was sent flying.
The flamethrower suddenly looked like a joke.
Just then, Silas’s former classmates appeared from behind the giant bean sprout.
Each of them wielded a sword, striking the bean sprout with swift precision.
Clang!
A metallic sound rang out.
“It worked, look!” someone in the crowd shouted, pointing at the deep gash left on the sprout where the blades had struck-a

blood red fluid was oozing out.
Silas’s former classmates leapt into the air, swapping positions. One attacked while the other defended, taking turns in perfect
coordination.
Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang!
Five minutes later.
The giant bean sprout crashed to the ground. The two of them hacked it into pieces..
The patrol team stepped forward again and blasted it with fire until the bean sprout was finally destroyed.
The crowd instantly erupted in cheers. “We won! We won!”
“Wait, what about that guy?!” someone shouted, pointing at the man whose blood had been drained. “I think he’s still alive!”
“There’s no saving him.” The patrol captain mercilessly aimed the flamethrower at the man. “Anyone infested by a mutant plant already has spores left inside their body. He’ll become an incubator for the seeds. Instead of letting you suffer through that, I’ll give you a quick end.”
Then, she aimed the flamethrower at the man.
A single scream echoed through the air. Then everything fell silent.
All that remained on the ground was a faint human-shaped mark.
‘Listen up, everyone! Mutant plants and animals will target anyone who has eaten human flesh first! If any of you have, step orward right now!” the patrol captain shouted sharply.
The crowd fell silent. No one admitted it. No one dared.
‘Stay alert.” The patrol captain glared at the crowd before leading her team away.
Meanwhile, Silas’s former classmates were showered with enthusiasm!
Everyone begged them for protection.
But they refused.
There were only about 20 of them in total-nowhere near enough to protect everyone.
They had to keep moving, rushing to wherever mutant plants appeared.
The front lines fought the mutant animals while the rear teams dealt with mutant plants inside the base.
The mutant animals launched concentrated attacks, and with heavy firepower on hand, keeping them at bay was relatively manageable.
The mutant plants? Impossible to guard against. You couldn’t tell where they’d pop up next.
Even with everyone on high alert, one or two mutant plants would still sprout in unexpected places.
By the end of the day, everyone was exhausted.
