Did something go wrong?

When Silas and the others came back, they said they’d be back soon. It had been days now. Why weren’t they back yet?

Silas was vague and couldn’t explain things clearly, only saying they were off doing something huge without specifying what it was. It was enough to make anyone worry.

“Look! Isn’t that Chief Bauer’s boat?” someone suddenly shouted.

Scott immediately craned his neck to look. Far in the distance, a tiny black dot appeared on the horizon.

It got closer and clearer.

Soon, they could make out that it was a boat.

Someone on board was waving both hands at them.

Scott immediately raised his binoculars, and the grin on his face spread from ear to ear.

‘They’re finally back!” He turned and shouted, “Go get their rooms ready! Dry out the damp bedding and heat up the food! The >ase leader is home!”

The people below immediately erupted into loud cheers.

Scott had told everyone that the base leader had gone out to find food and supplies for everyone.

And a triumphant return meant things were about to get better for all of them.

How could they not be excited?

The boat docked safely. A crowd immediately surrounded Leonel and Beckett. Autumn also received a warm welcome, though it

vasn’t as enthusiastic as those two.

Autumn didn’t think there was anything wrong with that.

Being the one behind the scenes was much more interesting than standing in the spotlight.

The real bigwig stays behind the scenes.

After finally returning to her room, she reached out and touched the bedding. It was warm and freshly dried.

The room was spotless, obviously cleaned every day.

“You must be starving. Eat something.” David walked in carrying a plate of shredded chicken pasta.

Autumn took it and polished it off in no time. “So good! Nothing beats your cooking. I’ve been living on boxed meals these past few days, and I’m so sick of them.”

“Oh, please.” David rolled his eyes at her. “Don’t you have plenty of prepared meals stored in your storage space?”

“Hehehe, I forgot,” Autumn replied. “Things were so hectic that I forgot about them.”

What took you guys so long? Did you pull off something big?” David asked.

“You have no idea! Let me tell you, we…” Autumn babbled on, bragging non-stop to David. “You have no idea how awesome I was. I was standing on a swing with my rifle rock steady, aiming, holding it, waiting for the right moment, and bam! I fired! Blew Gordon’s head wide open in one shot. Hahahaha

Seeing Autumn get completely carried away, David et out a helpless sigh.

When a kid was this capable, it really made the grown-ups look foolish.

Still, he was genuinely happy for her.

The more capable Autumn was, the petter her chances of surviving this apocalypse.

Just then, someone came over. “Asher! Come over after you eat. Mr. Marsh wants to see you.”

“Yeah, got it.” Autumn turned to David and said, “Wait here, I’ll be right back.”

She was still too young.

How could she come right back?

She didn’t return the whole day.

She sat side-by-side with Beckett and Leonel, getting chewed out by Scott!

‘You three have some nerve! Do you have any idea what would’ve happened if something had gone wrong? What would’ve happened to this base?” Scott pointed at Autumn. “Especially you! If you go down, this whole base goes down with you!

‘And you, Beckett. How could you go along with this nonsense? They’re young and don’t know any better, but what’s your excuse?

‘And Leonel! You’ve always been level-headed. Why were you acting so childish this time?!”

Scott had earned his position fair and square. He’d climbed the ranks one step at a time, and with his family’s support, had eventually become the shelter director.

His eloquence was amazing. If he wanted to, he could chew the three of them out for half an hour straight without repeating himself or even pausing for breath.

Autumn was 23. Leonel was 26. Beckett was 27.

All under 30. And they just stood there while 39-year-old Scott tore into them.

Not one of them dared say a word.

After all, he was right.

“The three of you are writing a reflection letter! 5,000 words each!” Scott barked. “And don’t let this happen again!”

Autumn looked at Leonel, then at Beckett. So who exactly was the base leader here?

Why did she have to write one too?
