The men around Gordon were quick to chime in. “Exactly. With the firepower we’ve got, who’d dare come after us? Those three amilies are all talk. If things really go south, they’ll be the first ones begging us for help.
‘Keep up the good work, and I’ll make sure you’re taken care of.” Gordon motioned for someone to bring over several carts loaded with food. “Take these down to the men. As long as I’m eating well, none of you will go hungry.”
The guards beamed. More flattery followed, each man trying to outdo the last.
None of them noticed the short, unassuming young man standing among Gordon’s bodyguards. He lifted his head ever so slightly, evealing a sharp jawline and the faintest hint of a smile.
t was Autumn. As for how she had managed to slip into Gordon’s personal bodyguard… That story started two days earlier.
After going over every possibility, Leonel and Beckett had finally settled on a plan.
nstead of forcing their way into the compound, they’d get someone close to Gordon. Close enough to earn his trust. Close enough
o become one of his personal bodyguards. That was the only realistic way to reach the armory.
A direct assault wasn’t an option. At best, they’d be throwing their lives away without accomplishing a thing.
After losing so many supplies over the past few weeks, Gordon had become extremely paranoid.
He saw threats everywhere.
These days, his bodyguards stayed with him around the clock.
He’d stopped throwing lavish parties. He’d stopped preying on kids. Most days, he rarely stepped outside his villa at all.
The only time Gordon ever left the villa these days was to inspect his armory and supply depot.
f he didn’t see everything with his own eyes, he couldn’t rest easy.
Those stockpiles were all he had left. His last line of defense. The foundation his power still stood on.
f he lost them, he was finished.
Autumn’s chance to get close to him had come from an idea inspired by Matthew.
A classic rescue.
Only this time, the person being rescued wasn’t Gordon. It was his son, Griffin.
Two days earlier, Griffin had gone out, as usual, flaunting his status on his way to visit one of his favorite boy toys
Halfway there, Beckett’s men sprang the ambush.
One by one, Griffin’s bodyguards were cut down right in front of him. By the time the last one hit the ground, Griffin was frozen with fear.
That’s when Autumn stepped in.

he turned the situation around, pulled Griffin to safety, and uncovered “proof” that the attack had been ordered by the Carters. he even handed Griffin the evidence herself, giving him every reason to march over and demand answers.
he Carters denied everything, of course. But it didn’t matter. Griffin still managed to squeeze a hefty payout out of them.
mpressed by her skill, he offered her a well-pard job as one of his personal bodyguards.
ince Griffin was Gordon’s only surviving son, the attack naturally caught Gordon’s attention.
nd so did the bodyguard who had saved him.
t first, Gordon wondered if Autumn might be the mysterious thief who had been raiding the central shelter. She was about the ght age. The right build.
lowever, the suspicion didn’t last long.”
utumn had a solid alibi. According to her entry records, she’d only arrived from the Jyncrest Shelter the day before.
he proof was right there on her points card.
While the central shelter had been getting cleaned out, the card showed transaction after transaction at the Jyncrest Shelter, each ne timestamped and impossible to dispute.
s for where that points card came from…
hat was Beckett’s doing.
/hile Autumn had been keeping everyone else busy, Beckett had been covering her tracks.
le’d guessed she’d pull something big sooner or later, so he’d prepared for it well in advance.
le’d sent someone to the Jyncrest Shelter ahead of time to register a points card using Autumn’s photo under the alias Aurum. fter that, it was just a matter of making sure the card was used all over the shelter, creating a trail of purchases that couldn’t be gnored.
ven under the best conditions, travelling between the Jyncrest Shelter andthe central shelter took at least a week.
round trip would take two.
rom Gordon’s perspective, there simply wasn’t enough time for Aurum to have committed the thefts.
More importantly, Gordon’s own arrogance worked in her favor. The only people he considered worth paying attention to were Scott, Leonel, and Beckett. He’d never bothered learning the names of the people working under Leonel. So the name “Autumn” or ‘Aurum” meant nothing to him.
