Silas was directing the others as they carried the last of the supplies out. When he saw Autumn sneeze, he looked over at her. “It’s getting colder every day. You should put on another layer.”
“I’m fine. I’m built like a tank.” Autumn yawned. Ske stretched and waved a hand. “I’m gonna get some sleep. Need to be well- rested if we’re going to pull off something big.”
As soon as she headed upstairs, Silas lowered his voice. “You four leave first. There’s a safeftouse about three kilometers southwest of the city. Wait there until everyone’s arrived, then head back to Karthmoor.”
“What about you?” one of them asked.
“I’ll stay here until the next team gets in and finish the handoff.” Silas glanced around the room. “We’ve all been here long enough that people recognize us. We can’t stay undercover much longer, so we’re pulling everyone out. The second team from Karthmoor should be here tomorrow.”
“All right. We’ll head out first. Stay safe.”
Silas patted him on the shoulder. “With Mr. Asher here, nothing’s going to happen. Besides…” A grin spread across his face. “I’d say this operation turned out pretty damn well.”
The others couldn’t help smiling too.
Two days passed in the blink of an eye.
Every undercover contact they had placed in the area had been replaced, and every handoff had gone smoothly.
Today, Silas was finally leaving with the last four members of his team.
Before he left, he turned to Leonel. “Mr. Wright, are you sure you don’t want to come with us?”
Leonel smiled. “We’ve still got a few things to finish up. Don’t worry, we’ll catch up with you soon enough. You should get going.”
All right.” Silas nodded. “Take care of yourselves.”
‘You too.”
Once Silas and his team left, the little building felt almost empty. Only Leonel, Beckett, Autumn, and two assistants remained.
Everyone else had already gone.
The new undercover operatives had moved elsewhere to establish fresh cover, leaving this safehouse officially retired.
Beckett spread a rough map across the table. “If we’re really going after Gordon, I’d say we strip him of everything before we take him out.” He tapped another spot on the map. “The Gounds made their fortune in coal mining, so they’re experts at digging and maintaining storage sites. Besides coal, they’ve stockpiled a lot of food and water. It’s all here.”
“Are you sure that’s the location?” Leonel asked.
“I’m sure. The security is incredibly tight. Guards everywhere you look. Based on what I’ve seen, you’d need at least a thousand people to force your way in,” Beckett replied. “Gordon has stationed practically all of his best men there. It’s the last thing keeping the Gounds standing. If we can take those supplies, then once Gordon’s dead, Griffin won’t have the connections or influence to

hold everything together. The central shelter will fall into chaos.”

“Coal’s worth its weight gold. Autumn leaned over the map. “I’ve already got plenty back home, but we’ve got over 80,000 mouths to feed. The more we can get, the better.”
Leonel studied the map. “If it’s guarded that heavily, I doubt they’re just protecting coal and food.”
“You read my mind.” Beckett nodded. “I’ve spent weeks trying to find the central shelter’s armory, and I’ve come up empty. That doesn’t add up. The Carters, the Blakes, and the Yorks have all wanted Gordon gone for a long time, but none of them have dared make a move. He’s got something keeping them in check. If it isn’t the coal mines, it’s the weapons.”
“Weapons?” Autumn’s eyes lit up. Now that was interesting.
She’d been eyeing the central shelter’s arsenal ever since she’d stolen all those boats.
Maybe this time, she could clean the place out.
“Autumn, what’s the next disaster?” Leonel asked.
She thought for a moment before answering. “The acid rain will eat away at the mountains, the soil, and every building left standing. Everything will crumble into sand. Then all it takes is a little wind, and you’ll have sandstorms that blot out the sky.”
‘So… sandstorms are next?”
‘Not just sandstorms. First come the high winds-gales, hurricanes, typhoons-along with drought. For some reason, the moisture n the planet’s surface just… disappears. Meanwhile, the ocean keeps swallowing more land. Species start dying off. But mutated plants and animals explode in number. It’s like an entirely new ecosystem takes over, slowly pushing humanity out. If we’re talking about what’s coming next…” Her expression grew serious. “The mutated wildlife should be on the move soon. Based on the imeline, they should already be spreading this way from the Jyncrest Shelter.”
Leonel and Beckett exchanged grim looks.
One disaster after another was bad enough. Several hitting at once would be a nightmare.
Autumn clapped her hands once. “No point worrying about everything at once. Let’s deal with what’s right in front of us.” She grinned. “We’ve spent all this time preparing. What’ve we got to be scared of?”
Leonel and Beckett chuckled. “You’re right. If anyone should be nervous, it’s everyone else. We’ve done our homework”
“So…” Autumn pulled the map closer. “Let’s figure out how we’re going to rob Gordon blind.” The three of them gathered around the table, lowering their voices as they worked through the plan.
