The competition had almost no rules Contestants could show off their talents, fighting skills, looks, physique, and even their wealth. As long as they had something worth flaunting, they were free to put it on display
The whole stage had turned into one giant show-off contest. It was dazzling to the point of being blinding.
After making her appearance, Emily returned backstage and frowned. “Honestly, why did Dad insist I show up? Those men are all so low-class. None of them are worthy of me.”
Standing beside her, Oliver smiled. “You’ve suffered a terrible injustice, but it can’t be helped. Among all of us, you’re the prettiest and the highest-ranking. If we don’t use you as bait, how are we supposed to lure out the big fish?”
Emily smiled smugly. “True enough. If you want to catch a big fish, you need irresistible bait.”
‘Only you would flatter her like that.” Griffin strolled in from outside, casually dropping into a chair. “The eldest son of the Carters didn’t even bother showing up.”
Olive merely smiled without responding.
Emily rolled her eyes. “Now that your illegitimate little brother is dead, you’ve certainly become a lot more confident.”
‘Shouldn’t I be?” Griffin replied with a grin before glancing at Oliver. “If he’d been as obedient and sensible as Oliver, I wouldn’t have had a problem keeping him around.”
‘What are you all talking about?” Another young man entered the room. His features were delicate and almost feminine, and there was a gentle sway to his walk.
Griffin looked surprised. “Matthew? What are you doing here? I thought you hated events like this.”
Matthew was the heir of the Yorks.
He rarely appeared in public and almost never left home unless absolutely necessary.
Without answering, Matthew slowly scanned the crowd below, as though searching for someone.
“What are you looking for?” Griffin asked.
“Someone.” Matthew’s answer was brief. “He should be here today.”
“Should be?” Griffin and Emily asked in unison. “Here?”
Matthew searched the audience again. When he still couldn’t find the person he wanted, disappointment flashed across his face. “So… he didn’t come?”
In the private viewing box across the arena, Autumn froze. “Huh? Why is she here?”
“Who?” Beckett and Leonel asked at the same time.
“Her.” Autumn pointed toward Matthew. “The girl sitting beside Emily”
“The girl?” Leonel frowned “You know… her?”

Autumn scratched her head. “Not exactly. The day before yesterday, when I went outside to deliver supplies to Silas, I saw a group of people surrounding her outside the city. They were shoving her around. I usually don’t interfere in other people’s business. but I really can’t stand seeing people bully women, she paused, then continued. “She wasn’t wearing much that day. They kept pushing her around, and half her waist was exposed. Her braid had been pulled completely loose. I figured she was so pretty that human traffickers had targeted her, so I stepped in and chased them away.”
Leonel and Beckett exchanged amused glances but said nothing. Autumri continued, “After those people ran off, she suddenly grabbed my hand and started dragging me away. I had no idea what was happening. She pulled me into an empty house and asked if I wasn’t afraid they’d come back for revenge. I was completely confused. Who’s going to take revenge on me? So I just told her I wasn’t afraid. Then… for some reason… she smiled.” Autumn rubbed her forehead. “It was so weird. She said that, for the first time, someone had protected her without caring about her status. Then she announced she’d finally found the person destined for her. I had absolutely no idea what she was talking about.
“So she asked my name. I made one up on the spot. I told her my name was Amos, just an ordinary guy living in the civilian district. Then she said she’d come looking for me.” Autumn looked utterly baffled. “I remember thinking… Is there something wrong with this person’s head? Why would she come looking for me? Then she stuffed this little pouch into my hands arrd ran off.””
She reached into her storage space and took out the pouch. “Here. This is it.”
Leonel reacted instantly. He snatched it from her, opened it, and found a small rectangular object about the size of his palm. It esembled an old cassette tape.
Beckett recognized it immediately. “Isn’t this a signal receiver?”
‘A signal receiver?” Autumn had barely repeated the words when… Across the arena… Matthew suddenly shot to his feet. His eyes ocked directly onto their private box.
‘Oh, crap!” Autumn immediately grabbed the device from Leonel and threw it into her storage space.
The very next second… Matthew stared at the signal detector in his own hand in disbelief.
‘It was there just now… The signal was there… Why did it disappear? He has to be nearby!” Unable to remain seated any longer, Matthew hurriedly rushed out.
Watching him leave, Griffin looked puzzled. “What’s wrong with Matthew?”
Emily shrugged. “Who knows? The head of the Yorks is hot-tempered, yet somehow his son turned out so soft. Personally, I think the Yorks should’ve been the ones looking for a live-in son-in-law.”
Oliver simply smiled. He didn’t comment, but he clearly agreed.
Among the heirs of the four great families, Matthew had always been the odd one out.
Meanwhile, inside the private box… Autumn looked uneasily at Leonel and Beckett. “Did I mess up? Should I not have saved him?”
