"I didn't doubt you."
"Then what was that talk about male models?"
Seraphina's face flushed. "Sienna said that, not me."
Lucian closed the book right in front of her. "But you also said it had been a long time since you used it, so you weren't sure."
She immediately slapped her hand over the cover. "Stop messing around. This book was hard to track down, and I'm finally in the zone."
"You can find the zone again."
"Lucian."
"I'm right here."
She pursed her lips, looking at him. "You were just discharged from the hospital."
"The doctor said no strenuous physical activity."
Seraphina's gaze dropped to his wheelchair. "Then what exactly are you doing right now?"
Lucian wrapped his fingers around her wrist, gently moving her hand away from the book. "I haven't moved a muscle. You're the one who needs to come closer."
Her eyelashes fluttered frantically. The retort on her tongue died the moment she met his heavy gaze. "You're playing dirty."
"Yes."
"You admit it that easily?"
"It saves time."
She tried to tug her hand back. "I'm done talking to you. I need to keep reading."
He didn't let go, his thumb idly stroking the inside of her wrist. "Sera."
Her voice softened. "What?"
"You were much more righteous when you were chewing out Melody Monroe at the bookstore today."
"That was different."
"How so?"
"She was trying to steal my book. You're trying to steal me."
A low chuckle escaped him. "I like the sound of that."
Realizing what she had just said, her blush deepened. "Don't twist my words."
"Then explain them."
Opening her mouth, she realized that any explanation would only dig her hole deeper. She turned her head away. "I'm not explaining anything."
Watching her avert her gaze, the playful glint in his eyes faded into something softer. "I know you want to reclaim what you put on hold. I know you're worried about falling behind, about not catching up to the person you used to be."
She stopped struggling.
Lucian loosened his grip slightly. "I won't stop you, and I won't let you put your life on hold for me."
She turned back to him. "Then why are you still bothering me?"
"I'll bother you, and you can keep working."
"Those two things contradict each other."
